07/11/2017 - David Unwin -
Bury Saxons, still on a high after last week’s draw at Puffs, entertained Thurston Spitfires’ regulars Paul Evans, Mark Cracknell and a slightly under the weather Colin Baxter, in this division one encounter.
Mark James, in top form, and David Unwin, showing rediscovered form, proved too strong for the Thurston trio, although Colin fought well, taking legs off both Saxons before finally running out of steam.
Tom Coleman, who had been rather off form of late, went into the match on a six game losing streak, and managed to extend this to seven when beaten 3-0 by Colin in his opening match. This run looked to be heading for eight after losing the first leg to Mark Cracknell, and team coach Mark James stepped in to offer some wise advice.
This advice did not produce instantaneous results, as Tom promptly went 0-10 down in the second leg, on his way to a two leg deficit. However, all changed from this point, (Tom claims it took a game before Mark’s advice sunk in), and the losing streak was over, Tom coming through to win 3-2.
He followed this up with a tight 3-1 win over Paul Evans, leaving the match score 8-1 with the doubles to play. The Thurston pair of Colin & Mark rapidly despatched the Saxons’ pairing of Tom & Mark 3-0, to give a final score of 8-2 to the Bury team.
I’d like to thank the Spitfires for the prompt start which enabled us to finish on time without incurring the wrath of the school caretakers, and the general good spirit which ran throughout the whole match – looking forward to the return!
