Match Report

17/10/2017 - John Waters.

It has been a long time since I’ve written a match report and would have loved to have reported an exciting and closely fought match, but the reality was that Vulcans were just too strong for the Crusaders, winning by 8 games to 2.

The dynamic duo from Ipswich, Sonja and Sean, were much too good for the trio of Crusaders although Sylvia and John did take a game off Sonja and Sean respectively.

Sonja cruelly didn’t allow Paul to get even one point in one of their 3 ends but deservedly won her three games, with some brutal hitting at times.
Sean, despite protesting that he wasn’t playing well, always seemed to have more than enough to win his three games.

Now we come to Gordon! Well, what can you say about this Thurston legend! Gordon is always very competitive but just dipped out in 4 games to Paul, the 3rd and 4th games going to deuce with Paul winning both. A delighted Paul reported that this was the first time he had got the better of Gordon so provided Crusaders with a much-needed early victory.
A comfortable win over Sylvia, who didn’t seem to be at her best all evening, was followed by a final singles defeat to John, who admitted afterwards that his game plan was just to hit the ball as hard as possible at every opportunity. Seemed to work though, Gordon only managing to take one game.

The doubles could have been a mush closer affair had Paul and John not clutched defeat from the jaws of victory in the 2nd game, losing at deuce from being 8-2 and 10-4 up. Rather despondent from this, they were beaten easily by Sonja and Sean in what turned out to be the final game of the evening.

A good time was had by all – I think!!
