Thurston Spitfires 8 - 2 Rougham Lions
13/03/2017 - Colin Baxter
This game was a potential banana skin for Spitfires in their quest for runners up spot. It looked like going that way in the very first game of the evening when Holly McGerty (Rougham) won the first leg 12-10 against Andy Cullen and then stormed into a 6-2 lead in the next. Cullen however turned things around with some fine attacking shots winning the leg 13-11 and going on to win the other two 11-5 & 11-6.
Paul Evans (Spitfires) had a very good evening beating Phil Sinclair 3-2 and McGerty 3-1 with some good steady play and very well chosen attacking shots. He did however find Adam Reeve too hot to handle as did Colin Baxter.
In both games Adam played consistently throughout, holding the table well and dominating the rallies. Surely Adam must be one of the most improved players over the last two years. Baxter went on to win his other two games beating both Sinclair and McGerty 3-1.
Cullen also went behind against Reeve losing the first leg 11-8 before moving up a couple of gears by out attacking his opponent winning impressively 11-5 11-6 11-5. Cullen also went on to beat Sinclair, winning in straight sets.
In the doubles Cullen & Baxter completely dominated proceedings against Reeve & McGerty with some clinical play winning 11-4 11-2 11-5 and winning the match 8-2. An impressive win against some really tricky opponents which keeps them on course for runners up spot.
