Match Report - Jaguars v Vikings 08-03-2017

Stowmarket Jaguars 3 - 7 Bury Vikings

08/03/2017 - Chris Smith

With both teams lingering at the basement of the Division a tense and closely fought affair was predicted.

Up stepped Chris Smith to kick off proceedings against Dennis Morgan. With Chris having recently beaten Dennis in the Bury Championships, but also losing to Dennis earlier in the season, this was queued up as an interesting contest. Unfortunately, this didn’t prove to be the case as Dennis won comfortably in 3.

Pete Bernard was up for Jaguars in the second match against Tom Coleman, Tom looked in fine form but Pete knicked one game with Tom running out the eventual 3-1 winner.

In the third match, Jaguars were expecting Jason Annal to redress the balance but a superb performance from Alan Brafield saw the Viking win narrowly in 5.

Dennis continued in the same vein to comfortably dispatch Peter Bernard in the fourth match, giving the Vikings a romping 4-0 lead.

Things were not going at all well for the Jaguars and the Vikings were threatening total pillage in the 5th, where Alan Brafield again started in fine form and came out the traps against Chris Smith leading 2 – 0. However, Chris dug deep and found the missing elements from his earlier games to start to turn the tide and stormed back to a 3-2 win.

Game 6 saw Jason & Tom meet each other. Jason was suffering illness and clearly at times was struggling to play his normal game but take nothing away from Tom who won the match 3 -1, leaving Jason despondent and unsure as to whether he could continue for the rest of the evening.

Peter and Alan contested game 7, with Alan continuing his fine form to win 3 – 1 but not without some good play from Peter who had managed to put in a creditable performance to make Alan work hard for victory.

Jason managed to complete his third game and beat Dennis 3-1 in a tight encounter, completely exhausting himself as a result and having to retire for rest of the evening.

The final singles of the night was between Chris & Tom, Chris had finally found his best form and hardly put a foot wrong as he despatched Tom in a 3-0 win, but not before some fine rallies and table tennis between the two of them.

Vikings made the final score a 7-3 win to them on the night when Alan & Dennis beat Chris & Peter 3-1 in the doubles

An enjoyable evening and many thanks to the Vikings for helping to clear up the equipment on the night as the other matches had finished considerably earlier with players leaving not wishing to disturb the remaining contest.
