Thurston Spitfires 8 v 2 Stowmarket Pumas
09/01/2017 - Colin Baxter
After a long Christmas break it was good to dust the bat down and get back on the table tennis table. Who had eaten too much? Who lacked exercise? Who had a sneaky practice over Christmas?
The action started with Paul Evans (Spitfires) defeating Jack Samson in straight sets with the last two being very close. Those extra chocolates made all the difference. To whom I am not sure.
Then up stepped Mark Cracknell (Spitfires) against David Gough. Cracknell’s 6 week absence from the table clearly showed and Gough took advantage playing a strong, consistent game to also win in straight sets.
Colin Baxter (Spitfires) then took on Martin Chamberlain with a Christmas cracker of a first game which Baxter won 14-12. Going 2 games up it looked all over but a spirited fight back by Chamberlain brought it back to 2-1 and the next game could have gone any way. Baxter however, clung on to win 3-1.
The best game of the evening was between Evans and Chamberlain which saw Chamberlain going 2-0 up before Evans brought it back to 2-2. Good steady play from both players and some good counter hitting eventually saw Chamberlain winning in the fifth 11-8.
Cracknell then got rid of the rust and with better timing began to hit the ball a lot better beating both Samson 3-1 and Chamberlain 3-1.
Baxter also went on to win his remaining games against Gough and Samson in straight sets and never looked troubled in either. The mince pies before the game had worked and Baxter still had 2 boxes to go home too.
In the last singles of the evening Evans defeated Gough 3-0 and in the doubles Cracknell & Baxter won in straight sets against Gough and Chamberlain to win the match 8-2. Only 350 days until next Christmas...
