Stowmarket Leopards 6-4 Bury Romans
11/01/2017 - Ian Bridgeman
The match between Stowmarket Leopards and Bury Romans originally scheduled for Nov 16, finally started on Wednesday Jan 11th in a busy week for both teams; Leopards having played and lost at Thurston Victors and Romans due to play Rougham Rangers the next night. The match started with 3 wins for the Leopards, Keith George beat Sylvia Kenyon 3-1, then Carol Clarke fought back from being 2-0 down to beat Clive Hodgson 3-2 and Ian Bridgeman followed this with a close 3-0 victory against Tim Jolly.
The fourth match of the night between Carol and Sylvia proved to be another close one; Sylvia took the first 11-9 before Carol reversed the score making it 1 all, again Sylvia went ahead taking the third 11-7 but again Carol fought back winning 11-8 to level the score, there was rarely more than 2 points difference in the fifth game before Sylvia came out on top 11-9 to gain the first point for Romans.
The next 2 matches were 3-0 wins for Leopards, Keith beating Tim and Ian winning against Clive and then things got a lot closer, the next 3 matches all going to 5 sets. In the first a now fully warmed up Tim lost narrowly to Carol, before a match which swung both ways ended with Ian beating Sylvia. Then in the final singles match, Keith was 2-0 ahead against Clive and cruising before the fightback came with Clive winning the next 2 sets before going down in the fifth and giving victory to Keith.
This just left the 'mixed' doubles with Carol and Ian beating Sylvia and Clive 3-0. So ended another enjoyable night of table tennis, the final match score 9-1 to Leopards but five 5 set matches shows this was closer than the score suggests, and indeed there wasn't much to choose between the teams at all, which is really the same story for the Division as a whole this season.
