Bolton News 27 December

Most teams in the Bolton & District Table Tennis League had yet another break from league matches while the second round of the Divisional Cups took place. In the Brian Gittins Cup for teams in the Premier Division and Division One, Premier team Ladybridge A had a 24.5 start against Wharton also from the Premier Division but didn’t really need it winning out 351.5 – 315. Division One’s Burning Desire had a 100.5 start however it was not enough against the might of the Premier’s Ramsbottom A who went on to win 386 – 337.5.  From Division One, Heaton Cricket Club A beat Hilton A 453.5 – 397. Another two Division One teams met. Meadow Ben A had a handy 50.5 start over Wigan TTC, but Wigan were able to hold on winning 377 – 351.5. A one-man Hilton D from Division One had no chance against Polonia Club A from the same division, giving Polonia the win 426.5 – 108. Unfortunately, there were also three walkovers with clubs unable to raise a team. Little Lever Cricket Club A gave the match to Flixton Cricket Club A, Hilton B gave it away to Radcliffe Cricket Club and Wingates put Farnworth Social Circle A into the next round.

In the George Yates Trophy for Division Two and Division Three teams, Division Two’s Bolton TTC only just ran out winners against Division Three’s Farnworth Social Circle C 340 – 335.5 despite Farnworth’s 29.5 start. Farnworth’s B team in Division Two also had a start of 21.5 but did not really need it running out winners  380.5 – 281 over Ladybridge B from the same division. Polonia Club C from Division Three had a 96.5 start but were unable to capitalise fully. Meadow Ben B from Division Two were winners 388 – 345.5. Albany from Division Three also had a large 76.5 start but were beaten by Saint Paul’s Peel from Division Two 394 – 264.5. There are four more results to come.

Division Three being slightly larger than the other Divisions had one more week of league matches to fit in alongside cup matches. Farnworth Social Circle C moved into top place after a 27 – 2 massacre of Hilton H. Meadow Hill A now slipping back into second place had a somewhat weakened team, with two of its best players away for early festivities. They went down 17 – 16 to Albany despite a resisting nine from John Nuttall. Meadow Ben C & D are now in third and fourth place. The C team had a 25 – 6 win over juniors Hilton I with nines from Jack Berry and Ian Wheeldon and the D team had a 23 – 13 win over Ladybridge C with nines from Neil Cowburn and Phillip Calvert. Farnworth Social Circle D just pipped Hilton G  17 – 16 despite a resisting nine from Dimitar Petrov. Fifth-placed Polonia Club C had an expected win 26 – 4 over struggling bottom of the table Meadow Hill B with nines from Henryk Michalowski and Karolina Mucha.
