Last week in the Bolton & District Table Tennis League the Individual Championships took place. Cash prizes were available for the best two players who entered in each division. In the Premier Division, ten players took part. It was first played as two round robins with the best two players from each group going through to the semi-finals knock out. In the knock out semi-finals, Matthew Westworth played Charles Musa with Matthew going through 11 – 8, 11 – 8, 11 – 6. Pawel Orzechowski faced Sam Wells and ran out winner 11 – 6, 11 – 2, 11 – 8. In the final, Pawel Orzechowski beat Matthew Westworth 11 – 3, 11 – 6, 11 – 6.

There were more competitive matches in Division One with matches extended over four or five sets. There were eight entries played as a round-robin of two groups of four. At the knockout stage Vojtech Sanc had a thrilling five-setter semi-final against John Barker with Vojtech going through 9 – 11, 11 – 3, 11 – 7, 11 – 13, 11 – 3. Mathew Fishwick played Leon Smethurst and went through 11 – 6, 11 – 3, 7 – 11, 11 – 7. In the final Vojtech beat Mathew 11 – 6, 12 – 10, 9 -11, 11 – 9.

It was a disappointing entry for Division Two with only two players taking part yet both guaranteed a cash prize. Kirit Chauhan beat James Young 11- 5, 11- 9, 11-6.

In Division Three there were ten entries, played along the same lines as the Premier Division. In the semi-finals, Jamie Sutcliffe played Peter Walker in a tight match beating him 11 – 8, 11 – 8, 7 – 11, 16 – 14. In another close encounter, Elena Cecilia Tepelus beat Malcolm Wilcock 11 – 7, 11 – 8, 7 -11, 11 – 7. In the final Elena was triumphant over Jamie 11 – 4, 11 – 6, 11 – 9.

This week the second round of the Divisional Cups take place.
