Table tennis stalwart Tony Chatwin’s daughter and granddaughter are raising money in his memory – by doing a skydive.

Tony’s granddaughter Evie Queenborough came up with the idea to help the Royal Derby Hospital Heart Failure Unit and Ward 408, where the Table Tennis England Honorary Life Member was cared for before he passed away at the age of 84 in April.

Evie, who will be joined in the daredevil stunt by her mum Helen, has launched a JustGiving page for donations.

She said: “We both have said in the past that we would love to do a skydive but just never have, so we thought it would be a really perfect opportunity to for us to do the jump and raise some money for the outstanding care the Heart Failure Unit and Ward 408 give.

“We have never done anything like it before so it will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for both of us.

“The care grandad received in hospital was outstanding and the doctors and especially the nurses, went above and beyond the call of duty to make my grandad’s time there safe and comfortable.

“We would like to thank them for their efforts and raise some money so they can help someone else’s grandad the way they tried to help mine.”

Tony was described as a ‘rock’ of the sport, having taken it up in 1952 and gone on to become one of the country’s most respected officials and administrators at every level from local to international.

He was presented with numerous accolades during his career, including the Keith Ponting President’s Memorial Trophy in 2017, presented for exceptionally long and outstanding service to Table Tennis England.
