The League’s Senior Championships were held recently at Bishop Perowne CE College, Worcester, with Janet Hunt, Tournament Secretary, in charge of the 10 events held during the day.

It was really great to have Simon Claxton back playing in the League after a break of 20 years and he had entered several events.  Simon first won the League’s Men’s Singles as a Junior in 1975/76.  He subsequently won this title a further 6 times – the last occasion being in 1996/97.  Twenty years later he took the title again.  In the semi-final he beat Geoff Burford 11-8, 11-3, 11-8.  In the other half of the draw Brett Brining beat Graham Thompson in a close game 11-5, 15-13, 12-10.  In the final Simon beat Brett in a 5-setter - 11-9, 5-11, 4-11, 16-14, 11-8, to take one of his 3 titles on the day.

In the Veteran’s Singles Brett reversed the result by beating Simon in the semi-final and Graham Thompson beat Dave Hallam in the other semi-final.  Graham beat Brett in the final 11-9, 8-11, 12-10, 11-9, to take the title in a repeat of last year’s final.

In the Men’s Doubles Simon teamed up with Dave Hallam, playing in the Championships for the first time.  They beat Brett and Geoff Burford in the final 12-10, 11-7, 7-11, 11-6.

Simon’s third success was in the Veteran’s Doubles – draw for partner  event, teaming up players from Division 1 with players from the lower divisions.  Playing with Dave Moss they beat Julian Barnes and Liz Hallam 11-4, 11-8, 11-8, in the final.

The Veteran’s Singles Handicap event saw Brett Brining (-2) beat Paul Smyth (+3) 21-9, 21-17 in the final.

The Tyler Cup, a Handicap event for all players, saw Eliot Brandwood (+2) beat Mark Clinton (+3) – 21-6, 21-13 in the final.

The Doug Young Cup, for players from Division 2, saw Eliot claim another title – He played his fellow team-mate, Julian Barnes, in the final, in a 5-set game – winning - 4-11, 9-11, 11-8, 15-13, 11-6.

The Michael Pye Cup, for players from Division 3, saw young 14-year old Jesse Bunn take the title.  Runner-up for this event was Henry Cugnoni, one of the University of Worcester team players.  Jesse beat Henry  11-5, 9-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-9.

The Charities Doubles for the Martin Birbeck Cup, was another ‘draw for partner’ event .  The players reaching the final of this event were Brett Brining and David Brown who beat Mark Clinton and Ben Meredith  3-11, 12-14, 13-11, 13-11, 11-3.

The Intermediate Singles, for players under 21 years of age, was won by Ben Meredith who beat another University of Worcester team players, Vito Pauletic,  11-7, 9-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-8 in the final.
