The club tournament was held on the evening of Thursday 23rdMarch
16 members entered the tournament including 3 from Winchcombe Scholars who were entering for the first time.
Organiser Nick Mytton had promised a different format in the singles competition and found a formula which everyone seemed to enjoy: Groups of 8, one game up to 11 with both players starting at zero, sudden death at deuce, hidden handicaps and replay points. Once the players had grasped the rules the group games were rapidly completed.
The top four in group A were Stefan Mytton, Chris Lane, Lee Wilkinson and Doug Payne and in group B were Graham Fisher, Jack Davis, Jerome Edwards and Keith Ferguson whoall progressed to the knockout stages.
Lee and Graham made it through to the final and in a very tense game Graham won 12 – 9. Trophies were presented to the winner and runner up by Mr Dick Prior, former long serving chairman of Winchcombe Table Tennis Club.
The doubles event was won by Craig Norledge and Joel Edwards who beat the pairing of Lee Wilkinson and Graham Fisher 13 – 11 in a nail biting deciding set. Trophies were presented to the winners and runners up by Mr Dave Metcalfe, chairman of the Cheltenham Table Tennis Association.
The tournament finished at 10.20 and members were able to retire to The Pheasant to enjoy a well earned pint.
