Division 1– House Martyns continued to pressure the top teams in division 1 when they entertained this year’s title contenders, Basement Dwellers. It was a very close match with only three games completed in the minimum of 3 sets. The ever-improving Joe Burt top scored for the home team with 8 points followed by Scott Milton with 7 and Jack Lancaster with 2. With 5 doubles points to add, House Martyns ended with a hard earned 22 points. Basement Dwellers had to fight hard for their points, yet no player managed to score a maximum during the match. Vince Court was awarded the player of the match by the narrowest of margins with 8 points. Mike Vickery added another 7 and Paul Rees 6. The 8 doubles points gave Basement Dwellers the win with a total of 29 points.

Minehead A hosted Gnomads in what turned out to be a short match as unfortunately the visitors were unable to field a full team, nor find a substitute. Player of the match was awarded to thick bat and spin specialist, Toby Kerslake who scored 6 singles points. Joe Camp added 4 and Terry Cadman 1.  There were only 3 doubles points scored. When the forfeit points were added this gave Minehead a final tally of 29 points. For Gnomads it was captain Martin Rant who led the way with 7 points scored and supported by Nigel Foster with 4. The doubles game was hard fought and resulted in 2 further points. The final score for the depleted Gnomads was 13 points

There was another short division 1 match this week when White Horse challenged Mad Batters. Again, it was the visiting team that couldn’t raise a full team, nor find a substitute for the evening. David Bryant was awarded the player of the match for the 6 points he scored, with Ian Rew scoring 3 and Colin White 1. In the doubles game that was played, White Horse added 2 points. When the forfeit points were added this boosted White Horse’s final score for the evening to 27 points. For Mad Batters both Jasper Pye and Marcus Short had respectable singles scores of 8 and 6 points respectively. They also won their doubles game for another 3 points. This left Mad Batters with a final score of 17 points.

Division 2– It was an all-or-nothing match when Roy’s Boys took on Allsorts. During the match only three of the games went beyond 3 sets. Star player for the home team was Diana Garner who was awarded player of the match for the only maximum of the evening. Captain Roy Hooper added an excellent 6 singles points. With 3 more doubles points Roy’s Boys ended the evening with 18 points. Allsorts played steadily all evening. The ambidextrous Sifa Vea top scored for the visitors with 7 singles points, with Roy Pointer scoring a further 6, and Mike Lawrie 3. Barbara Parker was the doubles specialist and helped add 6 doubles points for the team. Final score for Allsorts was 22 points, giving them a narrow victory.

There was one late result from last week’s Handicap Cup round when Minehead A played Roy’s Boys. It was a close-fought affair with every set being closely contested. To even up the competition Minehead, from the first division, were heavily handicapped whilst Roy’s Boys from the second division had quite generous handicaps. In this competition every point counts towards the individual’s and team scores. When all the points were totted up the only players with a net gain for the match were Toby Kerslake and Joe Camp. Each of them had gains of 28 points and victory went to Minehead by 35 points. There is only one more round of matches to go in this competition before the top two teams from each group move onto the knockout stage.
