Division 1– This week saw the battle of the Titans as Wiveliscombe and Basement Dwellers went head to head as they tried to settle which team will be the division 1 champions this year. For Wiveliscombe it was their final match of the season, but Basement Dwellers have one match in hand. The task for the evening was for Wiveliscombe to score sufficient points to give ‘Dwellers the need to conclude their challenge with the need for a high score next match.

This match turned out to be a close-fought affair. Dwellers’ Vince Court scored 5 and Mike Vickery and Paul Rees added a further 4 singles points apiece. The doubles were evenly contested with 5 points scored, giving Basement Dwellers a final tally of 18 points. It was again the pimples of John Edbrooke that managed the only maximum of the evening, and the player of the match award. David Woodland scored 6 and Paul Nutkins 4 singles points. With 6 doubles points Wiveliscombe won a narrow victory with 25 points, leaving the division 1 championship still undecided.

The final match of the season will be between Basement Dwellers and Minehead A. To win the division, Basement Dwellers will need to score 23 points. This match should be a thriller, with Minehead playing two of the highest ranked players in the league. It will take place on neutral ground at the Lawns on Tuesday 9thApril, with play commencing at 7.30pm promptly. Anybody who wishes to watch this final will be most welcome to spectate and cheer on both teams.

Division 2– It was also the final match for Roy’s Boys as they aimed to cement their second-place position in division 2 when they visited Space Invaders. This was definitely a game of two halves – the singles and the doubles. Space Invaders never imposed themselves in the singles with Matt Lawrence scoring 4 and Jim Stiles scoring 2 singles points. The doubles on the other hand saw Space Invaders score ‘take off’ as Margo Baker helped the team achieve a doubles maximum. Space Invaders ended the evening with 15 points. For Roy’s Boys the singles saw three maximums for: player of the match, Barry Hooper, Roy Hooper and Dianna Garner. The ‘Boys’ points scoring ended there with no doubles points being added. This still gave Roy’s Boys a comfortable win with 27 points and it was ‘mission accomplished’ for second place in division 2 for the season.

HomeAwayPoints
DriftersHouse Martyns350 - 299

The final of the knockout cup was completed this week at the Lawns where Drifters and House Martyns battled for the cup. From the start House Martyns struggled to get into the match. Scott Milton was the only team member who made any impression on the scoresheet, making a hard-earned gain of 20 points. The final score for House Martyns ended at 299 points. Star performer of the night was Drifters’ Liz Fletcher. Liz played a very positive and attacking game and took maximum advantage of her handicap to make a net gain of 43 points. Together with the gain of 8 points by Mike Pretty, Drifters ended the match as this year’s Knockout Cup champions by a margin of 51 points. Well done to champions, Drifters, and to all teams that competed this season.

The trophy presentation will be made at the finals and presentation event at the Lawns on Saturday 13thApril, commencing at 4pm.
