The table tennis league was in full action this week as the second half of the season started in earnest.

Division 1 - White Horse travelled to a full strength and on form Basement Dwellers team. The home team had a ‘Grand Slam’ match with maximums in all singles and doubles, with player of the match awarded to Mike Vickery. Basement Dwellers’ score of 36 points will help their challenge for the top spot in the division. White Horse battled away, with each player scoring singles points. Ian Rew took Vince Court’s bat to 5 sets in the first game of the evening but the visitors could only manage one further point each from Colin White and Jamie Robertson to give a total of 4 points for their efforts.

Current division 1 champions Wiveliscombe entertained Stogumber in a hard fought match. The home team dominated throughout despite a lack of form from David Woodland. John Edbrooke scored the only maximum of the evening for the player of the match award, with Paul Nutkins adding an excellent 8 points. David Woodland’s 4 singles points together with the team’s 7 doubles points gave a final score of 28 points. For Stogumber it was Marcus Short who was the star of the team, scoring 6 points, ahead of Martyn Summerell who scored 5. With only 3 doubles points to add the final tally for Stogumber was 14 points.

The closest match of the week was seen between Gnomads and visiting Minehead A. Gnomads scored consistently led by Martin Rant with 8 points and supported by Nigel Foster with 7 and Eddie Ferris with 4 points. The doubles points were evenly shared with Gnomads scoring 7 to bring their match total to 26 points. Minehead matched the scoring throughout the night and it was Toby Kerslake that managed the only maximum of the evening to earn the player of the match award. Joe Camp added 5 and Terry Cadman a solid 4 points. The doubles were finely balanced but with Minehead’s share being 6 points their final tally fell just short of a victory, with a total of 24 points.

Division 2 saw a full strength, and on form, Mad Batters team hosting Space Invaders. All players in the home team scored maximums with Trevor Short, and Hamish Cuthbertson losing out to Matthew Short for the player of the match award. With a further 6 doubles points Mad Batters ended the match with an excellent 33 points. Space Invaders have recently suffered injury problems and the dreaded flu bug, however, Margo Baker returned to match play to become top scorer for the team with 4 points. There was a new team player as Matt Lawrence made his debut for Space Invaders. His 2 singles points didn’t do justice to the quality of his game and further match play will see him have some great future battles. It was in the doubles where the ‘Invaders’ excelled as they scored a welcome 8 points to bring their total to a creditable 14 points. The win has lifted Mad Batters to the top of division 2 but with a lead of only 3 points it looks like this division will end with a grandstand finish.

The second Grand Slam of the week was achieved by House Martyns when they hosted Drifters. Joe Burt, Jack Lancaster and Ellie Baker all scored maximums, with Joe the player of the match. A maximum of 9 doubles points gave House Martyns the full 36 points. The overall score does not reflect the close scores seen in many of the sets and it can be said that Drifters fought hard, but for little reward. David Smith, Mike Pretty and Liz Fletcher all scored one singles point apiece. Trevor Stockdale was the doubles specialist for the evening and helped the team to glean three doubles points. Drifters’ final score was therefore 6 points.
