Division 1 saw the first ‘battle of the giants’ when Wiveliscombe played this year’s strongest challengers, Basement Dwellers. But it was the current champions that prevailed with John Edbrooke awarded player of the match for scoring the only maximum of the evening. Paul Nutkin scored 6 and David Woodland added a further 5 singles points. Wiveliscombe also got the better of the doubles with 7 points to give a final tally of 27. For Basement Dwellers Vince Court’s bat only managed to confuse two of his opponents and he was Dwellers’ high scorer with 8 points. Singles resistance pretty well ended with Mike Vickery’s 5 points and there was little joy with the doubles where 3 points were scored to give a total for the match of 17 points.

Division 2 saw Barn Boys play two matches this week. The first was at home where they entertained Allsorts. Graham Lamacraft scored the only maximum of the evening to be awarded player of the match. Steve Palmer added another fine 8 points. The score was only increased by a further 2 doubles points to give Barn Boys a final score of 19 points. The three Allsorts’ players exactly matched Barn Boys singles tally with Andrew Godfrey scoring 7, Barbara Parker 6, and Mike Lawrie 4 points. It was in the doubles that the match was won with Allsorts taking a full 9 points to reach a winning total of 26 points.

Barn Boys’ second match was a case of ‘the Boys vs. the Lads’ when they took on junior team, House Martyns. Barn Boys played steadily but singles points only came from Steve Palmer with 6 and Graham Lamacraft with 5. The doubles were contested quite evenly with 5 points added to give a total of 16 points for the ‘Boys’. It was the youth of the House Martyns that triumphed over the senior team that was still recovering from their earlier match. Joe Burt led the way as player of the match with the only maximum of the night and well supported by Jack Lancaster with 7 and Curtis Beynon-Pearce with 4 points. A further 7 doubles points sealed a convincing victory with a final score of 27 points.

It was another ambush for Tony’s Troopers as Captain Tony Burrows was mentioned in despatches as player of the match for scoring a maximum. Kerry Manicom also scored a maximum with Jon Kemp a further 5 singles points. With Troopers adding another 8 doubles points they continue their advance up the league table with an excellent 31 points. It was embattled Drifters that bore the onslaught and it was a steadfast resistance by David Smith with 6 points and Andrew Miles-Fuller with 5 points that enabled Drifters to hold the line. Trevor Stockdale was the doubles specialist for the evening which enabled the team to fight a rearguard action and gain a valuable 5 doubles points. The end of the encounter left Drifters with a creditable 17 points.
