A fine Lee Hooper maximum helped Roys boys to a 27-20 away victory at Shooting Stars. Team mates Barry and Roy Hooper added 6 and 7 singles points respectively to complete a fine team effort. For the second consecutive week John Phillips put in a fine performance for Shooting Stars taking 7 from 9 singles points which included a straight sets win over Barry Hooper.
Basement Dwellers inflicted a rare defeat upon Wiveliscombe thanks largely to a superb maximum from on-form Mike Vickery. Vickery also combined with team mates Vince Court and Rod Richards to take maximum points from his 2 doubles. Unusually Wiveliscombe only managed singles successes – Paul Nutkins over Richards and Dave Woodland over 5 sets against Court.
Swifts found it tough going in their first league match of the season. Kyla and Duncan Stothard and Toby Court played with great enthusiasm but were unable to record a point against tough opposition. Whilst Trevor and Marcus Short recorded maximums Mad Batters were forced to concede 15 points having fielded only 2 players.
David Smith scored a find maximum for Drifters in their 30-13 defeat of House Martyns. Andrew Burt top scored for House Martyns with 8 points from his singles eventually losing a 5 set tussle with Smith. Liz Fletcher and Trevor Stockdale took 6 singles points each for Drifters to help them to their 30 point total.
Seven West Somerset Juniors travelled to the Taunton Academy last weekend to compete in the Somerset County Trials. All 7 players applied themselves extremely well and were a credit to West Somerset Table Tennis Association. Joseph Burt excelled in his age group and played some fantastic attacking table tennis. Jasper Pye, Benjamin Forster, Joe Camp and Andrew Burt also played some superb matches and more than held their own against very strong opposition. Newcomers Ellie Baker and Kyla Stothard competed in the girls section and gave a very good account of themselves in their first tournament. Full ranking details will be published in due course.
