Match week 12 commencing 2nd January 2017
Chesterwell A 8 v Westfield A 2
This was a stupendous victory for the hosts and although influenced by the surprise absence of Kevin Bird for such a big fixture, nothing should detract from the superb display by the home side’s trio of veterans. Nicole Bird on both current rankings and form should have been a shoe-in for a treble but was well beaten by both Valdy Papiernik and Stan Galkowski and her only win on the night was somewhat of a surprise, edging out Mike Pond 8-11, 16-14, 9-11, 11-8, 11-8. Stephen Woolston’s capacity for surprise wins was not in evidence and he was well beaten. Patryk Polanski opened by seeing off Galkowski 11-7, 11-9, 11-7 and went down 8-11 and 9-11 in the 5th to Papiernik and Pond respectively. Nicole opted out of the doubles and Chesterwell completed a tremendous night with a 11-5, 13-11, 11-7 win over Woolston and Polanski
Wanderers B 3 v WDHA Royals 7
Paul Goodman did well with wins over Ethan Ali and Shyam Bavalia, but like his team mates couldn’t prevent Abin Islam gaining an excellent treble. Bob Hickson, having his worst season for years, failed to register and the other point was gained by Stewart Williams winning out 11-8, 19-17, 13-11 over Bavalia to see the hosts ail to gain that first elusive victory.
Thrapston 7 v Old Grammarians A 3
The visitors games tend to follow a predictable pattern and this was no exception with Steve Kendall gaining an excellent treble with his struggling team mates, Mick Ball and Phil Laurence again failing to register against the home teams trio of Mark Stockley, Chris Warliker and Ian Donaldson.
Chesterwell B 8 v Wanderers B 2
With Graham Ellson and Carlton in good form, the visitors were unlikley to gain their first victory and so it proved as both players gained good trebles, and despite Luke Hughes opening strongly with an 11-9, 11-4, 11-4 victory over Stewart Williams, dropped off badly with defeats to both Bob Hickson and Paul Goodman which meant he hadn’t scored more than a single point in any game at the half way stage and a big drop in form compared with the last few seasons. The hosts remain stuck to the bottom of the table and unless a rapid improvement, likely to remain there.
Wanderers D 4 v Wanderers C 6
This clash between the two Mears Ashby sides saw the C team edge out their club mates by 6 games to 4. The victors had James Findlay to thank with a fine treble with good support from Maurice Jones with 2 wins and Carl Singh with a single. Roger Ellingham, Graham Babbage and Mike Howorth all gained 1 win for the D team and then Ellingham and Babbage did well in the doubles to recover from losing the first 2 sets but then going on to win, taking the last set 14-12.
Westfield B 6 v Higham Band A 4
This was probably Higham Bands’ best performance of the season in restricting the league leaders to a narrow 6-4 victory. Westfields’ points were shared equally by their 3 players, Mark Thomas, Charlie Clements and Leigh Clements with 2 wins apiece. Highams’ points came by virtue of a great double from Keith Stockley and 1 win from Pete Martin. The two of them then combined to take the doubles and complete a good night’s work for the visitors.
St John B 8 v WDHA Superkings 2
This solid win for the home team sees them move up to 2nd place in the league and was mainly due to great maximums from Mike Terry (his 5th in 6 outings) and from David Hatherall. Paul Lipczak chipped in with a single and finally Terry and Hatherall combined to take the doubles and seal the 8-2 victory. Milan Pandya and Tarun Mistry scored a win each for the visitors to prevent the whitewash.
Wanderers E 10 v WDHA Challengers 0
Wanderers E are keeping as close as they can to the top team Chesterwell D with maximum points for Steve Hoole, Derek Shears and David May. Both Shears and May had close games against all three Challengers players with Ansh Shah taking May to a decider 5-11, 12-10, 10-12, 11-9, 7-11. The final doubles point going to Wanderers 11-1 in the 4th.
Westfield E 9 v Chesterwell E 1
Ian Rae and Wendy Bradford both registered their second hat tricks of the season, with good support from Nicole King winning twice, losing out to Chesterwells Gavin Birmingham 6-11 in the 4th end, which was the visitors only point despite a number of deuce ends which could have seen the point go the other way.
Westfield D 2 v Chesterwell D 8
Stuart Rae, having played only two matches including this one, took a point off Chesterwell’s Duncan Wright, in three ends. Stuart Holroyd secured Westfields final point of the evening, also against Wright, winning out 15-13 in the 5th. However, Wright managed to get on the scoresheet in a hard fought fight against Asish Nandi winning out 13-11, 9-11, 8-11, 10-12. The remaining points all going to the team heading the division, Johnathan Driscoll and Daniel Mann, who still maintain 100% records, although Holroyd pushed Mann to a 5th end, losing out 9-11 at the last hurdle
Stanwick VHTTC 10 v Higham Harriers C 0
Stanwick in 3rd place and only 7 points away from a promotion position with this clean sweep of Harriers C. It wasn’t all plain sailing as Jon Tuplin had to fight for his points, 13-11, 6-11, 13-11, 8-11, 11-5 against Matt Hicks, 11-6, 11-13, 12-10, 11-9 against Katie Hicks and 17-15, 11-4, 11-9 against Jamie Laughton. Geoff Neville and Kevin Tivey with an easier route to their trebles added the doubles for the final point of the night.
