Pitchford & Groth exit World doubles

England’s World Championships came to an end as Liam Pitchford and his Danish partner Jonathan Groth went out of the Men’s Doubles in Budapest today.

The 15th seeds were defeated by the eighth-seeded combination of Ovidiu Ionescu of Romania and Spain’s Alvaro Robles in five games.

Pitchford & Groth went 3-0 down in the last-16 clash before rallying to win the fourth. They also saved three match points in the next game, but couldn’t complete the comeback as they went out 4-1 (11-7, 11-6, 11-9, 9-11, 11-8).

Meanwhile, there were two surprises in the Men’s Singles last 32 as Dimitrij Ovtcharov of Germany went out 4-3 to Czech player Tomislav Pucar, while France’s Simon Gauzy eliminated second seed Xu Xin of China 4-2.
