27 Sep 2009 - Season starts

Promoted St Neots got of to a flyer in beating a good Haverhill team 9-1 and could be a force to be reckoned with this season in Division 1. The other promoted team, Soham 2 had a baptism of fire and were well beaten 9-1 by NCI who are expected to challenge for the title this season. Champions St Georges easily beat a weakened Impington 8-2 whilst St Ives 2 overcame Soham 1 6-4 with three wins each for Steve Fisher and Richard Wells.

In division 2 early season rustiness restricted Stapleford to a 6-4 win over NCI 3 with veteran Nigel Bates recording a maximum for the victors. Newly promoted Impington 3 came away with a creditable draw against St Georges 3 although newcomer Jim Ji Dejan won three for the saints. However Tracey Sambrook and Jeff Catlin both won two for Impington including wins over Mick Runswick. Despite NCI 2 having a less than adequate net that clearly favoured them, they lost 4-6 to Impington with Bob Pettit's three wins proving to be the decisive difference between the teams.

St Ives 4 with a maximum from Innes Christison beat newly promoted Impington 4 in division three whilst Soham 3 were too good for an under strength St Ives 3 winning 7-3. Over 2 proved too strong for Cambridge 4 winning easily 8-2 whilst Haverhill 2 managed a creditable draw with Over 3 for whom Owen Davies won his customary three singles.

In division four Impington 5 got of to a flyer in beating Bassingbourn, who were without Val Parkes, 9-1 thanks to maximums from junior Amy Catlin, Mike Johnston and Martin Bootman. St Georges 5 who are newcomers to the league lost 7-3 to Impington 6 with old hands Geoff Hudson and Dave Harrison proving too strong for them. St Georges 4 beat St Georges 6 7-3 in their local derby although Clare Macrae, making her comeback after a year off, won all three for the all ladies sixth team. The newly formed Cambridge 5 team whitewashed Over 4 10-0 and look to be strong early contenders to win this division.

5 October 2009 - Clash of the Titans

In an early season clash of the Titans NCI I and St Neots played out a predictable 5-5 draw in Division One with former county champion Keith Richardson winning three for NCI although he was pushed all the way in a best of five encounter with Hamish Yeung. St Ives I paid the price of being a man short going down 3-7 to Haverhill with Tony Reardon recording a maximum. St Ives II were much too strong in beating Over 9-1 with newcomer Mick Pearce recording two wins and just losing out to Over's stalwart, Roger Fensom. Champions St Georges thrashed Cambridge 9-1 with Lei Wei beating Steve Trevanion for the losers only success.

Newcomer Jim Ji Dejun looks to be a good find for St Georges III as his three victories against Cambridge II enabled his team to win 6-4 in Division Two. Cambridge III defeated NCI III 7-3 but with four of their wins coming in five sets, two from two sets down, the result did flatter them. Impington II won the local derby with Impington III 6-4 although ex-first division player, Jeff Catlin, won three for the third team. Priory without two of their best players lost 2-8 to Cambridge II whilst a maximum for Mark Lillyman could not stop Cambridge III from beating St Georges II 6-4.

Fred Laband was on form for Cambridge IV as they held St Ives IV 5-5 in Division Three whilst Impington IV are finding the step to this division tough losing 4-6 to CIBA. Alan Fitzgerald and Paul Jackson who has returned to St Ives after several seasons absence both recorded maximums in St Ives III 8-2 victory against Over II.

Hamish Ryder with three wins, ably backed by Harris Ryder and Peter Hutchison, enabled St Georges IV to beat Fulbourn 6-4 in Division four. Another player making a comeback after many years was former Essex league player Anna Bridge who made her debut for Impington V in their 10-0 whitewash of Impington VI. With Bill Knibbs turning out for Over IV it was always going to be difficult for St Ives VI as they lost 4-6 and it was good to see more new players in the league in Ian Wei for Cambridge V and Jaun Matilla Rodrigeos and Ami Abdelaal for St Georges V in a match that finished 5-5.

NCI continued their impressive start to the season by beating St Ives I 7-3 in division one. With Keith Richardson and Tim Avis playing for NCI it was always going to be a tough night for St Ives who were without Simon Pryke. Soham I dominated a full strength Over winning 9-1 with Over's sole success coming when Roger Fensom defeated Martin Freeland. In the local derby between Soham one and Soham II, the newly promoted second team comprising the Mohan family gained a very creditable 5-5 draw with all players contributing to the match score. Haverhill with only two players, Rob Cushen and Maria Boulton, played very well to secure a 5-5 draw at Impington although Dave Ford on his debut for Impington was very close to getting a winning start when losing in five sets to Maria.

RCG Stapleford I beat St Georges II 6-4 in division two although Rob Pownall played a blinder winning three for St Georges. Stapleford also beat NCI II 9-1 although the score flattered them with several games going to five sets including NCI's sole success when Kelvin Mitchell edged out Russell Cooper 12-10 in the fifth. Syd Dunsters three victories for NCI III paved the way for an impressive 8-2 victory at St Georges II whilst Priory overcame Stapleford II, who sorely missed, Tony Comisky 9-1. Cambridge II without one of their regular players, entertained Impington II who drafted in Peter Laughlin after an absence of over a year and he along with Tony Martin and Bob Pettit ran out comfortable 9-1 winners. Impington III are adjusting to life in this division and managed a 5-5 draw with Cambridge III. Peter O'Gorman gained a maximum for Cambridge but was pushed to five sets by both Helen Arnold and Tracey Sambrook.

A hard fought match in division three between two closely matched teams saw Haverhill beat Impington IV 6-4 although Mike Friday did his best to earn a draw losing in five sets to Andy Driver. CIBA continued their winning streak beating Cambridge IV 7-3 with Martin Toughey winning three singles including beating Fred Laband in three sets. St Ives IV just lost out 4-6 to St Ives II with both teams playing reserves but with Steven Pickering, back from University winning two and Paul Jackson three the third team came out on top. Sawston in only their second match are struggling to find any form and also lost out 4-6 to Haverhill.

Clare Macrae continuing her comeback won her three singles as St Georges VI beat Over IV 6-4 in division four and although Derek Fuller dominated for Bassingbourn he could not prevent his side losing out 4-6 to Fulbourn. Impington V only just continued their winning start to the season scraping past Cambridge V 6-4 and with lots of newcomers on show the match between St Georges V and St Ives VI finished 4-6.

Haverhill with Rob Cushen and Tony Reardon on form proved too strong for Cambridge I in division one and with Andy Driver playing up from division three, and beating ex club mate Caroline Wright, they ran out easy 8-2 winners. Champions St Georges thrashed Over I 10-0 and with Over only winning two games two games it emphasised the strength of St Georges. St Neots also had a good win 9-1, against Soham II whose only success came from Kieran Mohan and Soham II fared little better losing 10-0 against St Ives I who included Simon Pryke for his first match of the season.

In division two St Georges III bade farewell to Jim Ji Dejan in his final match before returning to China but not before his customary three wins ensured another emphatic 8-2 success against Priory. Newcomer Matt Holland also won two for St Georges with Priory's two wins coming from Ray Thorpe. RCG Stapleford II are missing the injured Tony Comisky and lost 2-8 to St Georges III and Impington II 1-9 and must be hopeful of his return soon to avoid slipping too close to the bottom of the division. In the local derby between Cambridge III and Cambridge II the second team prevailed 7-3 although the score does not reflect the closeness of the match with five sets being decided in five games. In another close derby NCI II beat club mates NCI III 6-4 but again seven of the nine singles were decided in either four or five sets. Impington III continue to adjust to life in the division two only losing narrowly 4-6 to RCG Stapleford I with good wins by Colin Adams over Russell Cooper and Tracey Sambrook against Dan Bates.

Haverhill with two ex-second division players in Andy Driver and Peter Driscoll were too strong for Cambridge IV in an 8-2 success in division three and Over II had a comprehensive victory against Soham III 9-1. There were three wins each for Matt Allen and Maurice Circus for Over with Soham's solitary win coming from Jon Audus who overcame Terry Edwards.

St Ives III beat a weakened CIBA 8-2 whilst St Ives IV with maximums from Joe Thorogood and Innes Christison accounted for Soham III 7-3. St Ives IV however with two wins from Gill Fitzgerald and one from Pippa Keane found Sawston too strong losing 3-7 thanks to three wins by Victor Riecansky.

Despite two wins for Margaret Chambers and one by sister Anne, St Georges VI found their fifth team too strong and went down 3-7 in division four. Tasha Fisher played her first game for St Ives VI and with Martin Fisher winning only one it was left to old hand Brian Freer to win their remaining points as they narrowly lost 4-6 to Impington V. Fulbourn were much too strong for Impington VI winning 9-1, Impington's only success came when Dave Harrison overcame Carl Woolf.

Champions St Georges maintained top spot in division one with a comprehensive 8-2 victory over Soham I. Steve Annison, still recovering from a serious injury 2 years ago, is gradually returning to form and playing up from the second division, won all his games as he did in another 8-2 victory over St Ives II. St Neots continue to make a big impression in their first season in the division and easily beat St Ives I, who included Simon Pryke, 8-2 and look the most likely to challenge St Georges for the title. NCI I without Keith Richardson and David Tiplady lost ground on the leading two as they were held to a 5-5 draw by Impington. Impington also beat Soham II 6-4 although Christian Mohan played well for Soham winning two singles including in four sets over Reno Phyo and just losing deuce in the fifth to Dave Rowell. A good all round performance in an even match saw Haverhill come out on top against St Ives II 6-4.

In division two Rob Pownall continued his great start to the season with three wins in St Georges 7-3 win when they travelled to NCI II. The ever improving Tracy Sambrook with a maximum and Helen Arnold's two wins, ably supported by Jeff Catlin, gave Impington III a big 9-1 victory over a good NCI III. Cambridge II with two regulars missing were no match for RCG Stapleford I going down 3-7 although both the reserves, Kwok Kee Chan and Darren Cooper acquitted themselves well with Kwok beating Dan Bates in five sets. Although Ray Thorpe won two singles for Priory he could not prevent the visiting division leaders Impington II running out 7-3 winners. In this match Impington raced into a 4-0 lead before Thorpe came back from two sets down to beat Bob Pettit 14-12 in the fifth and Rob Wallis similarly beat Tony Martin in another five set thriller.

Haverhill II entertained St Ives III in division three with the visitors winning 6-4. The standard of play, with several players having higher division experience, was above what you would expect in this league and the set of the match was Neil Farlie's win over previously unbeaten Paul Jackson. Junior Innes Christison continues to improve in winning three for St Ives IV although they were beaten 6-4 by Over II. A good all round performance from John Bray, Brian Judd and Duncan Taylor saw Impington IV record their first win in this division 6-4 at the expense of Over III.

Division four leaders Impington V were held 5-5 at home by St Georges VI with Clare Macrae unbeaten this season being well supported by Anne Chambers. Over IV were also held 5-5 by St Georges IV with a maximum for old stager Bill Knibbs although he only just beat Harris Ryder in five legs. Bassingbourn without Val Parkes continue to struggle and although Derek Fuller won three for them they lost 3-7 to St Georges IV.

In a very close match with the result in the balance until the last match Cambridge IV overcame their handicaps to beat Cambridge V 5-4 with Jon Chapman beating Tony Clark 2-1 to remain unbeaten on the night. Fulbourn entertained the multi national team of St Georges V triumphing 7-2 although Amr Abdelaal having beaten Tim hands was unlucky to go down in five games to both Carl Woolf and Duncan Gates.

In division two of the league Rob Pownall continued his good form with three wins as St Georges II won 7-3 at NCI II. David Oates also won two for St Georges whilst Martin Cadman did likewise for NCI II.

Division four saw Bassingbourn play their first home match at St Neots and once NCI IV managed to find the venue they overcame the hosts 6-4 despite Val Parkes winning three for the home team. In the same division a tired display from Fulbourn saw them capitulate completely against Cambridge V 0-10.New signing Mike Fricker led the way for Cambridge and was ably supported by Tony Clark and Aldo Galea.

A strong NCI I team visited Over and following an 8-2 success have moved to the top of division one, whilst the loss pushes Over further into the relegation fight. Although St Neots had a convincing 9-1 win against Impington I, the match was much closer than the result indicates, with six of the sets going to 4 or more games. Impington's solitary success came from Reno Phyo who beat hard bat specialist Chris Pickard. Impington did however recover from this defeat and secured a very good win by 7-3 against St Ives I. Mandy Mills was in fine form winning three singles and was well supported by Reno Phyo and Dave Rowell who had two wins each. Promoted Soham II achieved a creditable draw against St Ives II and with Liam and Christian Mohan winning two singles each and Patrick Mohan one they look as though they will remain in the division.

Relegated RCG Stapleford easily beat their second team 10-0 in division two and they followed this up with a 7-3 success against Priory to remain favourites to regain promotion. Nigel Bates was on form for Stapleford with a maximum but Kin Choi Chan provided some resistance in winning two for Priory. St Georges III also look contenders for promotion with their latest victory coming at the expense of a strong Cambridge III team 8-2. Promoted Impington II continue to establish themselves in this division with a close 6-4 success against NCI II with a maximum from Jeff Catlin and good support by Tracey Sambrook and Colin Adams.

In division three St Ives III continue continued their winning run by beating Over III 7-3 with three wins each for Alan Fitzgerald and Paul Jackson. Junior Yao Shi continues to improve and impress and his maximum ensured Sawston drew with Cambridge IV 5-5 whilst Haverhill II without Neil Farlie were also held to a draw by the Over II team of Terry Edwards, Ray and Matt Allen. The ladies team of St Ives V with three wins by Gill Fitzgerald and two each by Pippa Keane and Barbara Pace beat higher place Impington IV 8-2.

St Georges VI with Clare Macrae winning three and Margaret Chambers two just beat NCI IV 6-4, but without Macrae, although they played enthusiastically against Fulbourn, they were struggling throughout the match and went down 1-9. Impington V continue with their winning run and accounted for St Georges V 6-4, Mike Johnston won three singles and Amy Catlin one whilst Martin Bootman suffering a nasty judo injury was unable on this occasion to contribute.

22 November 2009 : SAINTS GO MARCHING ON

Champions St Georges had a great result against Haverhill winning 9-1 in division one. Brothers Kevin and Martin Gray were on fine form both winning three games and only dropping one leg between them. Steve Trevanion also played outstandingly well to beat Maria Boulton and Rob Cushen in straight sets and only lost out 3-1 to Tony Reardon. Following an injury to Kevin Gray in the last singles Martin Gray and Steve Trevanion made a fine comeback from two legs down with some great blocking and topspins to run out comfortable winners in the fifth. The next few weeks will prove crucial to St George's attempts to retain the title with games against high flying NCI, St Ives and a strong St Neots team. Another 8-2 defeat for Over against Soham II leaves them stuck in the relegation zone whilst St Ives I with Simon Pryke playing were unlikely to lose to Cambridge I and finished the match 6-4.

In division two NCI III, with three wins by Sid Dunster, including a five set encounter with Ray Thorpe, fought out a hard fought 5-5 draw with Priory, whilst another three wins by Jeff Catlin ensured Impington III beat NCI II 6-4 to remain in the top half of the table. NCI II did however fare better against Cambridge II with a superb performance from the 'flying' Martin Cadman who recorded a maximum, including 5 setters against both Jim Carswell and Peters Zivtins.

Promotion hopefuls Haverhill II, even with senior veteran Colin Cushen, still managed to beat a poor St Ives IV 7-3 in division three but top of the table St Ives III gave a two man Sawston team no chance in a 10-0 whitewash.
In division four junior Harris Ryder won his three singles for St Georges IV but this was not enough to prevent top of the table Impington V winning 6-4 thanks to two wins each by Anna Bridge and Mike Johnston plus anther from another junior Amy Catlin. A strong Over IV with maximums by Bill Knibbs and Maurice Circus were too strong for Fulbourn, winning 8-2 but Fulbourn then redeemed themselves by beating the ladies of St Georges VI 9-1. Bassingbourn with stalwart Val Parkes ably supported by Rob Trigg sneaked home 6-4 against St Ives VI for whom newcomer Greg Zieba won two singles.

St Neots kept up their challenge in division one with an emphatic 10-0 win against Over which they then followed up by beating St Ives II 8-2. Shaun Murray was on top form for St Neots whilst St Ives two victories came from Richard Wells and Reuan Williams. Williams then followed up this victory with three wins for his team against St Ives I and was well supported by Richard Wells who won two and Steve Fisher one as St Ives II ran out surprise 7-3 winners. St Georges maintained their bid to retain their title with a 10-0 whitewash of Soham II whilst Soham I had a good win over a weakened Haverhill who were without Rob Cushen. Cambridge I drew 5-5 with Impington I with two wins each for Liwu Wei and Andy Merritt for the home team and two each for Dave Rowell and Mandy Mills, including a very good win against Li.

In division two St Georges III beat RCG Stapleford I 7-3 in the top of the table clash with Steve Annison recording a maximum and Andy Maguire and Mick Runswick two each. Stapleford did however return to form as they beat Impington II 7-3. A very close match then saw NCI III hold St Georges III to a 5-5 draw, with three wins by Mick Runswick for St Georges and two each for Jon Thackray and Sid Dunster.

St Ives III consolidated their position at the top of division three by beating struggling Impington IV 9-1. Over II gave Over III no chance when beating them 10-0 to overtake Haverhill and move into second spot. Haverhill only managed a narrow 6-4 victory against CIBA for whom Martin Touhey recorded a maximum. Yao Shi recorded another three wins for promoted Sawston although they went down 4-6 to Soham III.

In division four a very close match between promotion hopefuls St Georges IV and Cambridge V ended all square at 5-5 with junior Harris Ryder winning three for St Georges including inflicting a first defeat of the season on Mike Fricker. Two 100% records went as Bassingbourn beat St Georges VI 8-2 with Derek Fuller beating Clare Macrae and then Macrae beating Val Parkes. Tony Turton's three wins were the difference as NCI IV snatched a 6-4 win against league leaders Impington V and they then followed this up with an emphatic 9-1 success against St Georges V with Turton again winning three along with Eddie Bolandi.

Without the services of Tony Reardon, Haverhill were no match for a strong NCI in division one and were well beaten 9-1 by one of the teams challenging for the title. Haverhill's sole success came when Rob Cushen beat Tim Avis. St Ives II, without Richard Wells due to family illness, were no match for Impington who ran out easy 7-3 winners. Mandy Mills continued her recent good form for Impington with wins over Reuan Williams and Steve Fisher whilst Fisher lost 12-10 in the fifth to Dave Rowell before overcoming Reno Phyo in five having been two games down. St Ives I had a resounding 10-0 win against Over, who look the most likely candidates for relegation being firmly rooted to the foot of the table.

In division two it was good to see Tony Cominsky back after injury for RCG Stapleford II, and he made an immediate impact by winning three singles to steer his team to a 5-5 draw against Impington III. St Georges III beat St Georges II 7-3 in an inter club match with the second team's cause not helped by Rob Pownall who had to concede two singles due to injury. A full strength Priory also proved too strong for St Georges II with only Rob Pownall providing any real resistance winning two and David Oates beating Kin Choi Chan as Priory won 7-3. Two wins each for Syd Dunster and Alan Spackman were cancelled out by two wins each for Tony Martin and Bob Pettit as NCI III drew 5-5 with Impington II.

Over II with Bill Knibbs playing up and winning three gave Sawston little chance as they won 8-2 in division three whilst high flying St Ives III whitewashed Cambridge IV 10-0 without losing a game. Although John Bray and Duncan Taylor won two each Impington IV had little chance of winning and they went down 4-6 on their visit to Soham III.

In division four Impington V managed another 6-4 victory at the expense of Fulbourn to retain top spot in the division. Fulbourn included Howard Leek for his league debut and he impressed everyone with his control, stroke play and demeanour which brought him his first win. Mike Johnston won two for Impington and was ably supported By Anna Bridge whose energy enabled her to bounce around the table to record three wins and the doubles with Johnston. Fulbourn's other successes came from Carl Woolf, who won two singles including coming back from 2-0 down against Johnston, and Duncan Gates who chipped in with one. Over IV with a 6-4 win against Bassingbourn have moved up to third but Maurice Circus lost his 100% record as he lost to Val Parkes as she won her customary three singles for Bassingbourn. Mike Fricker just beat Greg Zieba in the fifth to retain his 100% record as Cambridge V drew on their visit to St Ives VI 5-5.

14 December 2009 - St Georges back on top

Champions St Georges regained top spot in division one as they beat St Ives I 7-3 to go five points clear of St Neots. In division two maximums from Mick Runswick and Hugo Brown ensured they beat NCI II 7-3 to remain one point clear at the top of the division. Second placed RCG Stapleford kept up the pressure on the leaders with another 7-3 win against Cambridge III although Marc Meunier had good wins for Cambridge over Russell Cooper and Nigel Bates. 28 March 2010 - St Georges retain title

Despite fielding a weakened team, St Georges I were still too good for St Ives I in division one and their 6-4 victory was enough to see off the challenge of St Neots to remain champions. Steve Trevanion with three wins and Kevin Gray two formed the backbone of St Georges win. Over suffered another heavy 9-1 defeat at Impington and are already relegated despite games still to play, Soham II look set to fill the second relegation spot.

In division two RCG Stapleford thrashed a two man Cambridge III 9-1 to edge out St Georges III by one point for the title. Mick Runswick and Marcus Frey with maximums did their best for St Georges in their 8-2 hammering of NCI II but it was not quite enough. RCG Stapleford having struggled and been without the services of Tony Comiskey for most of the season were already relegated and suffered another big loss against Cambridge II by 9-1. Priory completed their fixtures with a 7-3 loss to Impington III and are also relegated due to St Georges II picking up four points in their 6-4 loss to Impington II.

St Ives III had already secured promotion back to division two at the first attempt by winning division three, and Over II with a 7-3 win against Impington IV, will join them. Terry Edwards' maximum and two wins by Ray Allen ensured that Over secured the win. St Ives V lost 9-1 to Haverhill II to confirm their relegation back to division four and look likely to be joined by Sawston who lost 7-3 to St Ives IV.

In division four Cambridge V and St Georges IV are both promoted but both have one game to play and with only two points separating the two teams the division title is still up for grabs. Although Cambridge V beat St Georges VI 6-4 Clare Macrae helped her St Georges IV club mates by winning a maximum including coming back from two sets down to beat Mike Fricker in five. St Georges IV kept up the pressure on Cambridge IV by beating St Ives VI 7-3 with Howard Middleton the man of the match with three wins.
