Les Constable's report on the season
An extraordinary situation arose in the 1980/81 season. Although Soham,
as usual, won the championship of the 1st Division, the University
second came second ahead of St Ives. The University team of
Lusher, Walmsley and Egert had a very good season and absolutely emulated
their first team who could only finish seventh in the division. Mick Palmer,
Robert Swift and Andy Withers made sure that Soham retained the headship
and in the percentages two of the players (Swift and Withers) obtained
over 90% with Palmer in the eighties. Wesley easily became champions of
Division 2 and next season should see them proving their status in Division 1.
Keith Lloyd, Bob Pettitt and Paul Jolley were a good team with Pettitt having
an average of over 90%. Swavesey and Press were relegated from Division 1
with Fisons 1 going up with Wesley to Division 1.
In the Final of the Knockout Handicap Trophy Caravans International
defeated Soham 1 by six games to three with Thorpe winning three for the
Caravans - a good achievement.
