Cambridge & District TTL 1977-1978

Les Constable's report on the season

In the 1977/78 season Soham had a very successful season to say the least and they did not drop a point in the first division, gaining 44 points from 22 matches and, indeed, only losing only 10 sets altogether. Keith Richardson did not lose a single game and was 100%. Mick Palmer lost only one game and Brian Richardson lost eight games. Paul Day, Andy Barden and Desmond Douglas played in one match which ensured that Soham would be champions for another season. It seemed that no club could stop Soham from going on and on winning the championship although one never knows.

University Press just pipped New Chesterton Institute for second place by one point and Guildhall came next by reason of an inferior sets average to NCI. Tony Littlechild did well for the Press but did not pay his full quota of matches. Geoff Davies and Chris Brammer also did well with Davies only losing 5 games. John Thurston and David Tiplady were the mainstay of New Chesterton Institute with Steve Andrews and Ken Green giving good support. Albert Jackson, Eddie Sharpe and Gerald Coteman were the front line for the Guildhall with Albert gaining the highest percentage.

Telephones 2 and YMCA 2 were relegated with the latter team unable to obtain a single point and it is interesting to see that their average in games was almost the opposite of Soham 1 as YMCA gained only 20 sets! Also YMCA 1 finished third from bottom and so they just missed relegation.

Soham 4 came top of Division 2 by gaining 40 points so that Soham now would have four teams in the first division. University 1 were also promoted but University 2 and Eastern Gas were relegated. Brian Jones was 100% for Soham 4 and C.Palmer and P.Brotherton completed the successful Soham team. M.Noble, R.Collins and J.Firth were the University team that enabled them to be promoted to the first division. There were eight sectionalised divisions in the league comprising 92 teams.
