Les Constable's report on the season
In the 1968/69 season New Chesterton Institute became champions of the league
with YMCA as runners-up. John Thurston went through the season unbeaten and
Stephen Andrews only lost eight games throughout the season. Vic Tiplady
completed the team. They finished 12 points ahead of YMCA 1 which showed
their vast superiority also bearing in mind that YMCA had the services of
Ken Muhr, Trevor Waller (Junior Champion) and David Jarvis. Ken Muhr only
lost nine games the whole of the season and Trevor Waller six but he had
played fewer games. Guildhall who came third had the services of Albert
Jackson, Chic McCartney and Gerald Atkinson, Atkinson having the best record.
Cambridge University again had the services of John Corrall who only lost
seven games the whole of the season but he was not supported very well by
his other two members of the team (Egerton & Sharp) both winning less than 50%
of their games. University Press were again very well served by Tony
Littlechild who only lost four games the whole of the season, but here again
Ron Nunn and Keith Puddick could not find the necessary form to back him up
although Paul Chisnall came in a few matches to give added strength to the
team. The rest of Division 1 included Soham 1 and 2 (the second team topping
the first team), YMCA 2, Torchbearers 1, Wilburton 1, Hospitals and St
Georges 1 with the two latter teams being relegated. Soham 3 and Impington 1
were promoted to the first division making three Soham teams in the first
division and Impington were mainly indebted to Bernard Adams and Lofty Adams
for their success although Brian Judd played an important part as well. There
were 89 teams in the League comprising four divisions which were
sectionalised (Div 1, 2, 3a, 3b, 4a, 4b, 4c & 4d).
