Report
The Cambridge Table Tennis Club hosted the 16th TuckerGardner Cambridge & District Table Tennis League Championship at the Netherhall School Sports Centre on Saturday 26th January.
In a repeat of last season's competition top seed Martin Gray became Men's champion and collected two other trophies, the Mixed Doubles with Caroline Wright and the Men's Doubles with his brother Kevin Gray.
Martin's victory in the Men's Singles final came over older brother Kevin after he had overcome Sean Murray in the semi.
Kevin once again found himself running out of steam as he also reached three finals and the semi finals of both the Handicap and the Veterans Handicap.
His other final appearance came against Liwu Wei in the Veterans Singles. The defensive Gray had got the better Liwu in a five game semi final of the Men's Singles, but came unstuck in another match that went the full distance in the Veterans final.
Hang Li, saw off the challenge of her Cambridge University colleague Helen Pooley in the Ladies Singles final after getting the better of 2007 Champion Caroline Wright in the semi final. Pooley had put out Clare Macrae in her semi.
Hang Li also picked up two other winner's trophies firstly beating Patrick Mohan in the Handicap Singles, when both players started on (+10) up to 41. In an exciting final she won 42-40.
Her third win came in the Drawn Doubles when she partnered Nick Rate to victory over Raphael Assier and Robert Fincham. She did come unstuck in the Mixed Doubles final along with Devesh Shete
Rate had a mixed day, gaining a second winner's trophy in the best final of the day against Christian Mohan in the Junior Boys Singles. He came back from 7-3 down in the 5th game to clinch the title 11-9. He was defeated in the final of the Junior Doubles when he partnered Darren Silva against Mark Dawkins and Moumen Kuwaider.
Impington's Helen Arnold and Tracey Sambrook became Ladies Doubles Champions when they got the better of Clare Macrae and Janett Klinke after losing the first game.
Thirteen year old Rhys Davies from Ellesmere also recovered from a first leg reverse against 10 year old Greta Pocaite in the Mixed Cadet Singles to win the next three legs.
Greta did however became the Girls Singles Champion at the first attempt overcoming Amy Catlin in straight games.
Carl Woolf (+22) got the better of Fulbourn club colleague Marc Meunier (+14) in the Veterans Handicap Singles.
In the Restricted Singles event for players playing outside the top division, Shaun Murray who is currently playing for St. Neots in Division 3 comfortably defeated Darren Silva to claim the title.
