Report

On a day that started at 9.00am and finished at 10.05pm and consisted of 249 matches, Martin Gray and Caroline Wright took home three winners trophies each.

However it was Martin's brother Kevin Gray that dominated the day reaching four finals and the semi final of the Men's singles. Unfortunately for Kevin he ran out of steam and only collected one winner's trophy.

Top seed Martin Gray became Men's champion for the 2nd time (the first being in 2000) overcoming the challenges of firstly Devesh Shete in the semi final and then Martyn Livermore in the final. Livermore had put out Kevin Gray in a 5 leg semi final.

The Gray brothers teamed up to take the Men's Doubles over Livermore and the County's top junior Nick Rate.

Martin's third trophy of the day was the Mixed Doubles when he combined with County team mate Caroline Wright.

Wright who has moved into the area recently claimed the Ladies Singles trophy at the first attempt with victory over County colleague Clare Macrae. She also gained a third trophy in tandem with Helen Arnold when they overcame Macrae and County Junior Amy Catlin in the Ladies Doubles final.

Ian Gregory from St Neots picked up two trophies, gaining victory in the Mixed Cadet Singles against Patrick Mohan, and then got the better of Patrick's elder brother Christian Mohan in an exciting Handicap final that was won 42-40.

As expected Nick Rate won the Junior Boys singles, although he was extended to 4 legs in the final by Keiran Mohan.

Christian and Keiran Mohan took revenge for their earlier defeats, beating Rate and Gregory in the Junior Doubles final. This was also a reverse of last season's result.

Kevin Gray felt his exploits catch up with him, as he was defeated in both the Veteran's Singles final, by Liwu Wei and suffered another defeat at the hands of Dave Rowell in the Veteran's Handicap Singles.

The best final of the day was the Restricted Singles final as two Cambridge University colleagues slugged out a five leg final. Arjun Chandra just got the better of Phil Intallura, clinching the deciding leg 12-10.

Nick Rate teamed up with Cambridge junior Samuel Pickup to overcome Liwu Wei and Tony Clarke in the Drawn doubles event.
