Cambridgeshire Table Tennis Association President Keith Richardson became Men’s Singles Champion for the 5th time with a win over Martin Gray (St. Georges) at the Tucker Gardner Partnership Cambridge & District Table Tennis League Tournament. He becomes the first player to take the title on five occasions and moves one victory ahead of Cambridge University’s David Atkinson who was not available to defend his title this season.

Richardson who now plays for NCI in the League last won the trophy in 1997/8 season, was seeded No.3 but his road to the final was made clearer as No.2 seed Kevin Gray (St. Georges) crashed out to Shaun Murray (St. Ives) in round 2. Murray went the same way in the Quarter final against Mathias Carl (Cambridge TTC).

Top seed Martin Gray had eased his way into the final overcoming 4th seed Devesh Shete (Camb. University) in his semi final. After a tight first leg Richardson never looked back to take the title in straight games.

Shweta Kamdar (Cambridge University) won her first title overcoming Jannett Klinke (St.Georges) in the Ladies final. She had to come from behind, after dropping the first leg 13-15 in a closely contested final. Kamdar made it a hat-trick of successes, with wins in the Ladies Doubles with Junior Girls winner Amy Catlin over Klinke and Nicola Drew, and combined with Devesh Shete to get the better of Martin Gray and Klinke in the Mixed Doubles.

Richardson teamed up with NCI team mate David Tiplady to win an epic battle over the Gray brothers in the Men’s Doubles final. Coming back from 2-1 down, they took the fourth leg 11-9 and the final leg 13-11 to clinch the title.

Tiplady, playing in the event for the first time clinched a five set thriller over Liwu Wei (Cambridge TTC) in the Veteran’s Singles final.

Christian Mohan was too strong for younger brother Patrick (both Soham TTC) in the Mixed Cadet Singles. He and his elder brother Kieran joined forces in the Junior Doubles, but after taking the first leg they were pegged back by Nick Rate and Ian Gregory who took the next three legs to become champions.

15 year old Rate who has been playing for Bassingbourn in the Cambs League followed up his three successes in the Kings Lynn League tournament last weekend with four titles in Cambridge. He added the Junior Boys title overcoming Fulbourn TTC’s Moumen Kuwaider in straight sets, the Handicap singles, beating Christian Mohan and topped it off with a hard fought five set victory over Phil Intallura (Camb. University) in the Restricted Singles.

In the last event of the day to finish Andrew Maguire (St. Georges) and Peter Zivtins (Cambridge TTC) proved too strong for Rob Pownall (St.Georges) and Mark Dawkins (Cambridge TTC).

In all there were 194 matches played and a total of 60 entrants to the tournament. Cambridge League Secretary Val Parkes presented the trophies to the winners. For other league news visit http://www.camttl.org.uk/
