Report

Martin Gray (No.2 seed) won the Men’s Singles title for the first time on Saturday, defeating No.1 seed David Atkinson in a closely contested final. Gray battled back from losing the first leg to clinch the title, 21-17 in the third against his County colleague. He had knocked out last seasons champion Mick Harper in the semi-final.

Atkinson had an easier run to the final, defeating No.8 seed Andy Merritt in the other semi-final.

Gray also teamed up with his brother, Kevin to take the Men’s Doubles, gaining revenge for last season’s final defeat at the hands of Mick Harper and Martyn Livermore.

Injuries and prior engagements for top players meant that the Ladies Singles was contested by six Cadet girls, who also played for the Junior Girls Singles. There were different winners of the two trophies with Emma Cope taking the ladies title against Laura Stewart, but losing out to her sister, Claire in the Junior Girls.

Emma Cope and Laura Stewart paired up to take the Ladies Doubles from Claire Cope and Caroline Speer.

In fact St. Ives juniors did very well all day, with Thomas Whyborn overcoming David Blake in the Mixed Cadet Singles and also beating David Miller from Haverhill in the Handicap Singles. Blake was also beaten in the Under 17 Junior Boys Singles by Robert Green before they teamed up together to win the Junior Doubles against Alex Austin and Jamie Nunn from Haverhill.

Malcolm Stennett dominated the Veterans events beating last season’s champion Mick Harper in the Over 40’s, and Barry Hagger in the Over 50’s. He was however on the receiving end, against Cambridge club mate Andy Merritt in the Restricted Singles final.

Husband and wife team of Alan and Gill Fitzgerald from St. Ives won the Mixed Doubles against Martyn Livermore and his Step-Daughter Samantha Wilkin.

David Miller from Haverhill was paired with Pat O’Bryne in the Drawn Doubles. Unfortunately due to family commitments Pat was unable to play, so Dave Hodgson from Wisbech stepped in to take his place. They proved to be a formidable pair and won the closest final of the day against the Cambridge duo of Matt Custerson and Peters Zivtins.
