Brilliant Jarvis demolishes Gao Ning

Tom Jarvis picked up the biggest win of his career as he sunk world No 43 Gao Ning to top his group at the Swedish Open.

The 17-year-old, himself ranked 299, was giving up more than 250 places to the experienced Singaporean, who was the singles silver medallist at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

But that made little difference as Jarvis edged the first three games, and then bounced back from losing the fourth to seal his victory with an emphatic 11-3 score in the fifth.

Combined with yesterday’s victory over world No 211 Hampus Soderlund, it meant Jarvis finished top of the three-player group and earned him a bye into the second preliminary round, where he will face either Jang Woojin (KOR, 55) or Can Akkuzu (FRA, 116).

The Skegness player said:

Gao Ning is a well-known player and I knew how he played, he’s good in the rallies so I knew that I had to be safe. Today my serve and receive was good and that enabled me to be strong on the first attack. I focused on playing backhand to backhand against him.

I knew this was a really big chance to beat a top player. For sure the win over Hampus yesterday gave me confidence.

Andrew Baggaley was another to impress in Stockholm. Currently ranked No 151, he beat the 75th-ranked Swede, Anton Kallberg, to also top his group. He will next play Pavel Sirucek of Czech Republic, who is ranked at 142, in the first preliminary round.

Meanwhile, Paul Drinkhall won his two group matches to book his place in the next stage, though he needed seven to overcome France’s Joe Seyfried. He has a bye through the first preliminary round and will face either Jiang Tianyi (HKG, 60) or Zhai Yujia (DEN, 124).

However, Liam Pitchford went out having lost a tight match 4-3 to Park Jeongwoo of Korea and David McBeath was also defeated by a Korean, Jeoung Youngsik, most recently ranked No 27 in the world.

In the women’s singles, Tin-Tin Ho was beaten in her second group match by world No 21 Chen Szu-Yu of Chinese Taipei.
