Stroud Closed Tournament report

The tournament was held on Sunday 21st Feb at Deer Park, with Finals night booked for Thursday 7th April at the same venue. A total of 54 players took part, including 48 in the Open singles, the highest ever number. Many familiar faces were present and plenty of new participants as well. All the events were well represented, only the Division 4 singles was down on numbers from last year. The whole event ran from 9.00 to 5.00, an earlier finish than has been achieved before, and many thanks are due to Tracy, Ian, Carol & Emily on the day for their efficient organisation. Dave Adamson deserves a special mention, although not able to play Dave put on an excellent refreshments stand and ran the raffle.

The Open singles proceeded according to form with the two unbeaten players in Division 1 Olly Tyndall and Anthony Kent proceeding to the semi-finals, although not without being pushed as Olly in particular survived a 5 set thriller with a previous  open champion Will Berkeley. Olly and Anthony are joined in the semis by Dave Reeves and Dave Harvey respectively for what promises to be a high quality finals night.

The Division 2 singles was a tough competition with the top four players in the averages all being present. Congratulations to Mark Attwood who triumphed in the final against Steve Greening. Division 3 honours went to Stephen Biles, who beat his team mate and top seed Graham Eden in the final. The Division 4 competition was run in groups, which yielded a final with two junior players competing, Alex Horseman coming out on top over Charlie Cole.

The Veterans final will be between Dave Harvey and Dave Lloyd, who knocked out top seed Liwu Wei in the semi-final, while many-time winner Dave Harvey dispatched Will Berkeley. Dave Harvey is set to be a very busy man on finals night, as he is also playing in the open doubles final with Olly Tyndall, and the mixed doubles with Kim Selfe. The mixed doubles final is against Emily Standing and Dave Reeves, while the open doubles opponents have yet to be decided, as the semi-final between the top seeded pair Anthony Kent/Dave Reeves and Mark Farrow/Dave Lloyd was not played. The ladies doubles final is also still to be played, between Emily Standing/Tracy Dibble and Emily & Carol Philp. These two games lost out on the day as a result of having to vacate the hall by 5.00, and will be played before finals night.

Last but by no means least, to complete finals night Emily Standing and Kim Selfe, the top two seeds, will contest the Ladies final.

Overall an excellent competition, my personal thanks to all who took part and helped on the day to make it a special event, and there is a superb set of matches to look forward to on finals night.
