TWO young table-tennis players from Stroud boosted their national rankings with excellent performances at this weekend’s Inter-regional Qualifying event at Plymouth.
Stanley Shilton, 11, and Marcus Holba, 13, both represented Gloucestershire in the competition, competing against 34 other under-15s for selection for the South West region squad. And with contestants drawn from Wiltshire, Avon, Devon, Cornwall and Somerset, as well as Gloucestershire, the competition was intense.
Stan, whose national ranking is now too high for him to compete in the under-13s event, put in a strong performance to claim second place and qualify to represent the South West in the national regional competitions.
Meanwhile Marcus, in his second season of playing the sport, will have boosted his national ranking by securing an excellent 12th place.
It was a great showing, with both players claiming top-12 places in their regional age group, and augurs well for the future of youth table tennis in the county.
