Following a season of twists, turns, nets and edges, Braunston ‘B’ have emerged as champions of Division 2 of the Stamford and Rutland Table Tennis League. Although they have one match still to play, two victories over Bourne ‘A’ in the past fortnight have earned Braunston the necessary points. Paul Gibson defeated singles champion Harry Jackson in the first encounter; he was strongly supported by Basil Bagshaw and Bill Seese with two wins apiece. A 10-0 win in the return fixture can be partially explained by Harry’s unavailability. David Webb replaced Bill Seese in this encounter and he enjoyed an unbeaten evening with his team-mates.
Second place has not been decided, but Bourne ‘B’ have put the pressure on Stamford Free Church by defeating them 7-3. Joe Orford was unbeaten while Chris Holland and Stuart Wills both won twice. Although a 9-1 victory over Nomads was very important, with John Chambers and Vic Hoffman unbeaten, the Churchmen must earn at least four points in their one remaining fixture to secure runners-up spot.
In the one other match, Uffington CC ‘B’ defeated bottom side Bourne ‘C’ 8-2. Martyn Dennis was a three-time winner while Chris Gardiner and Jonathan Rowland each won twice.
