STAFFORD TABLE TENNIS
The group stages of the Handicap Cup competition are now well underway. In Group A the four teams Burton Manor Defenders, Villains, County Officers Saints and Uttoxeter TTC C have all won one game each and lost one game each.
Group B has first division leaders Stone out in front with one win and a draw against Burton Manor Greys 4.5 games each. Weston Pioneers and Burton Manor Avengers have only played one match to date.
Uttoxeter TTC A are undefeated so far in group C and lead the way. Weston Comets and Voyagers are still to play their second round match.
There is a similar story in group D with Weston Apollo undefeated on four points. County Officers B and C have two points while Burton Manor Marauders are bottom without a success to date.
In the only league match in division two Uttoxeter TTC B’s hopes of the title were dented when they suffered a 6-4 reverse to mid-table Burton Manor Avengers. Roger Willetts and Alan Thorne both posted maximums for the Avengers.
Second and third placed teams Burton Manor Defenders and Burton Manor Vikings met to try and close the gap on leaders Stone. The outcome was a 5-5 draw which leaves the Defenders one point behind and the Vikings five. Colin Burgess gained a maximum for the Vikings with Darren Jones and Ian Moore replying with a pair each. Burgess and Luke Blackband combined in the doubles against Moore and Cyril Merriman and won 11-9, 11-3, 11-4 to secure the point.
A 10-0 defeat at the hands of Burton Manor Marauders confirmed relegation for Burton Manor Villains. Weston Apollo beat Weston Pioneers 8-2. Robert Pugh and James Kelly both collected maximums.
An 8-2 success by County Officers B against County Officers C guaranteed that they will be promoted but with top spot still to be decided between them and Uttoxeter TTC B. Nigel Cotton and Michael Stevenson picked up trebles and Colin Rawles a double.
Weston Voyagers had mixed fortunes beating Weston Eclipse 6-4 but then losing by the same scoreline to Uttoxeter TTC C. Best performances in both came from Finley Simms with five out of six and Alistair Wright four. For the opposition the Eclipse’s Luke Hough and Uttoxeter’s Nick Butler and Gerald Crookes all gained a brace each.
Burton Manor Greys defeated County Officers Tapirs 6-4 despite an unbeaten performance from Thomas Eyton-Jones. John Hartley, Alan Cooke and Frank Chapman all posted two wins each.
Stone maintain their position at the top of division one through a 10-0 victory over Burton Manor Villains. Burton Manor Defenders remain in second with an 8-2 win against Weston Pioneers. Ian Moore and Cyril Merriman both gained maximums.
Burton Manor Marauders move into fourth place with a 7-3 defeat of Weston Comets. Will Ferry picked up a treble and Darren Ball and Glen Cowper doubles. Uttoxeter TTC A are one point behind after a 9-1 success over Weston Apollo. Roger Butler and Tim Goodliff were unbeaten while Peter Drew dropped one game to Robert Pugh.
Uttoxeter TTC B stay top of division two on sets difference only after a 10-0 whitewash of County Officers Saints. Hot on their heels with the same points are County Officers B who defeated Burton Manor Greys 7-3 in their latest outing. John Short collected three wins and Nigel Cotton and Tim Presswood two each.
Weston Eclipse remain in third following a 9-1 win against County Officers Tapirs. Anthony Watson and Luke Hough were undefeated while Thomas Eyton-Jones gained the Tapirs consolation against Keith Thompson..
In the bottom of the table clash second from bottom Uttoxeter TTC C came out on top with a 9-1 defeat of bottom side County Officers C. Nick Butler and Gerald Crookes both had maximums while the Officers only success came through Keith Litherland’s win against Pamela Jones.
With Burton Manor Defenders without a fixture Stone move clear at the top the top of division one with a 9-1 victory over Weston Comets. Phil Birchall and Dennis Camp were unbeaten while Maurice Adams dropped one game to Graham Fairhall. Burton Manor Vikings remain in third following a whitewash of Burton Manor Villains.
Uttoxeter TTC A move up the table with 10-0 and 8-2 wins against Weston Pioneers and County Officers A. Roger Butler and Peter Drew gained six of the best. Weston Apollo and Weston Comets shared the points in their match. Bob Elliott, Jim Kelly, Graham Fairhall and Mac MacFarlane all picked up a pair each. Kelly and Elliott combined to win the doubles and secure the point against Fairhall and Macfarlne 11-7, 5-11, 11-7, 11-9.
Uttoxeter TTC B move into the lead in division two on the same points as County Officers B but with a better sets average following an 8-2 success against Burton Manor Greys. Andy Fox collected a treble and Dave Clark, Steve Jones and Tim Presswood doubles.
County Officers Tapirs move away from the bottom positions with a 9-1 defeat of fellow strugglers Uttoxeter TTC C. Thomas Eyton-Jones, Nathan and Jon Phillips all posted maximums.
Burton Manor Defenders continue to lead the way in division one following a 10-0 win against County Officers A. On the same points in second but with two games in hand are Stone after their 8-2 success against Weston Apollo. Natalie Riley and Danny Sullivan both collected maximums.
The Apollo went to feature in two drawn matches against County Officers A and Burton Manor Marauders. Best performances for the opposition came from Will Ferry with three wins and Darren Ball, Jonathan Benge and Neal Jones with two each. In the Officers game the Apollo’s Jim Kelly and Bob Elliott went down in the doubles 8-11, 11-13, 7-11 to Benge and Jones while in the Marauders match Kelly and Rob Pugh came out on top against Ferry and Ball 11-7, 5-11, 11-4, 5-11, 11-8.
Officers A featured in another drawn match which saw Burton Manor Villains break their duck and gain their first point of the season. They still remain bottom though. Neal Jones picked up a triple and Nigel Cotton and Steve Cotterill a pair each. In the all important doubles the Villains Hazel Waters and Paul Richards got the better of Jones and Cotton 7-11,11-9,11-9, 11-5.
Burton Manor Marauders finished their week with an 8-2 defeat of Weston Pioneers. Will Ferry posted a treble and Pete Knight and Darren Ball doubles.
Despite going down 6-4 to Burton Manor Avengers Uttoxeter TTC B move into second in division two through 8-2 defeats of Weston Eclipse and Weston Voyagers. For the Avengers Roger Willetts and Alan Thorne scored maximums. Overall Dave Clark picked up seven from nine and Steve Jones five from six.
The Eclipse returned to winning ways defeating Uttoxeter TTC C 9-1. Gerald Crookes gained Uttoxeter’s sole consolation against Keith Thompson. Burton Manor Greys beat County Officers C 7-3. Tim Presswood picked up a treble and Allan Cooke, Frank Chapman and Alan Morris doubles.
County Officers Saints shared the points with County Officers Tapirs. Thomas Eyton-Jones collected three wins and Jon Phillips and Dennis Evanson two. Evanson and Grant Duberry combined for the Saints to win the doubles against Phillips and Bill Barber 11-3, 11-8, 11-4.
Burton Manor Defenders currently top the table in division one following 6-4 and 7-3 victories over Burton Manor Villains and Uttoxeter TTC A. Darren Jones and Ian Moore gained five out of six and Cyril Merriman was unbeaten in his sole appearance.
Second placed Stone whitewashed Weston Pioneers and have the same points as the Defenders but have two games in hand. Lying in third are Burton Manor Vikings who also won 10-0 against Weston Apollo and have games in hand as well.
Uttoxeter TTC A went down again 7-3 to Burton Manor Marauders 7-3. Adrian Hough collected a treble and Will Ferry a double. Uttoxeter’s Roger Butler picked up four out of six in both. County Officers A got the better of Weston Comets 9-1. Johnathan Benge and Cliff Bell were unbeaten while Graham Fairhall gained the Comets consolation against Neal Jones.
County Officers B continue to lead the way in division two with a 7-3 success against County Officers Saints. Nigel Cotton and John Short both scored maximums. Also scoring two maximums were Roger Willetts and Allen Thorne of Burton Manor Avengers who beat County Officers C 8-2.
County Officers Tapirs defeated Weston Voyagers 9-1. Nathan and Jon Phillips were unbeaten while Bill Barber dropped one to Alistair Wright. Burton Manor Greys got the better of Uttoxeter TTC C 8-2. Allen Clarke posted a treble and Tim Presswood and John Hartley doubles.
Stone strengthened their grip on top spot in division one with an 8-2 defeat of defending champions Burton Manor Vikings. Paul Myatt and Andy Dixon both posted maximums. Burton Manor Defenders remain in second with a whitewash of Weston Comets.
Elsewhere County Officers A won 7-3 against Weston Pioneers. Neal Jones picked up a treble and Cliff Bell and Lisa Brown doubles.
Weston Eclipse move into second place in division two through an 8-2 success against County Officers C. Anthony Watson gained three wins and Steve Davies and Keith Thomson two each.
Burton Manor Greys then secured a 5-5 draw against the Eclipse. Tim Presswood scored three wins for the Greys while Keith Thomson and Luke Hough replied with a pair each. Presswood and John Hartley combined to secure the doubles against Hough and Thomson 10-12, 11-7, 9-11,
12-10 and 11-6.
Burton Manor Avengers got the better of County Officers Saints 6-4. Roger Willetts won all three singles for the Avengers while Thomas Morris and John Gale collected a brace each. Willetts and Niranjana Perumal combined to win the vital doubles against Morris and Dennis Evanson 4-11, 7-11, 11-5, 11-6 and 11-4.
It’s all change at the top of division one with Stone moving into pole position after beating last week’s leaders Burton Manor Defenders 6-4. Neil Hough collected a treble while Darren Jones replied with a double. Hough then combined with Phil Birchall in the doubles to overcome Jones and Cyril Merriman 4-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-2 and 12-10 to gain the two points.
Elsewhere Weston Pioneers broke their duck for the season with a 6-4 win against fellow strugglers Burton Manor Villains. Toby Burrows, Lisa Brown and Hazel Waters all picked up a pair each. Once again the doubles made the difference with Burrows and Brown overcoming Waters and Paul Richards 11-6, 11-5, 4-11 and 11–7.
County Officers A continue to lead the way in division two with 9-1 and 7-3 victories over Uttoxeter TTC C and County Officers Tapirs. John Short gained six of the best and Michael Stevenson five out of six and Colin Rawles four.
Keeping up the chase in second are Uttoxeter TTC B after a 9-1 defeat of County Officers C. Dave Clark and Steve Jones were unbeaten while Janine Illingworth let one slip to Alan Morris. Uttoxeter TTC C went down for the second time in a week 6-4 to County Officers Saints. Thomas Morris picked up a treble and Nick Butler and Gerald Crookes doubles. Grant Duberry and Dennis Evanson combined to win the doubles 11-9, 8-11, 11-5 and 11-9 against Nick Butler and Colin Talbot for the match.
Burton Manor Avengers only managed one point from their two matches losing 6-4 to Weston Eclipse and drawing with Weston Voyagers despite maximums from Roger Willetts in both. All returning a brace each were Anthony Watson, Steve Davies, Keith Thompson, Steve Gadsby and Niranjana Perumel.
With division one leaders Burton Manor Vikings without a fixture Burton Manor Defenders took full advantage to move to the top of the table through a 8-2 win against Weston Apollo. Cyril Merriman and Darren Jones both posted maximums.
Also unbeaten in Weston Comets 7-3 victory over Weston Pioneers were Graham Fairhall and Mac MacFarlane. Uttoxeter TTC A defeated Burton Manor Villains 9-1. Peter Drew and Roger Butler did not lose a game while Andrew Fox ( from the B side ) dropped one to Hazel Waters for the Villains consolation.
Burton Manor Marauders got the better of County Officers A 6-4. Adrian Hough picked up a treble and Will Ferry and Jonathon Benge doubles. Hough and Ferry combined to win the vital doubles for both points against Benge and Lee Palser 11-5, 11-6 and 11-5.
Uttoxeter B move into second spot in division two with an 8-2 defeat of their own C team. Dave Clark and Andrew Fox both gained three wins each. County Officers Tapirs whitewashed County Officers C.
County Officers Saints and Weston Voyagers shared the points in a 5-all draw. Grant Dubeery collected a treble and Thomas Morris, Steve Gadsby and Graham Brackstone doubles. Gadsby and Brackstone partnered each other to win the doubles against Duberry and Dennis Evanson 11-4, 12-14, 11-6, 11-13 and 11-6 to gain the draw for the Voyagers.

The Greys went on to win 8-2 against County Officers Tapirs. Overall Tim Presswood picked up five out of six. The Tapirs also went down 9-1 to Uttoxeter TTC B who themselves the lost 6-4 to Burton Manor Avengers for whom Roger Willetts and Allan Thorne posted maximums.
Uttoxeter TTC C got the better of Weston Voyagers 6-4. Nick Butler was undefeated while Alistair Wright and Graham Brackstone replied with a brace each for the Voyagers. Gerald Crookes partnered Pamela Jones to win the vital doubles and the two points against Wright and Brackstone 11-8, 14-12, 10-12,4-11 and 11-9.
Burton Manor Vikings continue to lead the way in division one with a 9-1 win against County Officers A. Gareth Dunn and Colin Burgess were unbeaten but Luke Blackburn dropped one against Jonathan Benge.
Stone move up the table into second with two 10-0 victories over County Officers A and Weston Comets and a 9-1 win over Burton Manor Villains. Paul Richards gained the Villains consolation against Danny Sullivan.

Weston Apollo got the better of Burton Manor Marauders 7-3 despite a Will Ferry maximum. Bob Elliott, Robert Pugh and Jim Kelly all replied with a pair each. Uttoxeter TTC A gained their first win of the season 7-3 against Weston Pioneers. Roger Butler and Peter Drew were both unbeaten.
County Officers B are the frontrunners in division two after a 7-3 victory over Burton Manor Avengers for whom Roger Willets was undefeated. John Short, Michael Stevenson and Colin Rawles all collected a brace each.
Burton Manor Greys whitewashed County Officers C and are three points behind the leaders. Also three adrift are Weston Eclipse following their 8-2 success against Uttoxeter TTC C. Keith Thompson posted a treble and Anthony Watson, Luke Hough and Nick Butler doubles.
On the same points are County Officers Saints after a drawn match with County Officers Tapirs. Thomas Morris was unbeaten while Nathan and Jon Phillips combined to to win the doubles and secure the first point of the season for the Tapirs. Burton Manor Avengers recovered from their earlier defeat to beat County Officers C 9-1. Josh Stephens gained the Officers consolation against Niranjana Perumal.

Burton Manor Vikings lead the way in division one with two 10-0 victories over Weston Apollo and Weston Comets, who also lost 9-1 to County Officers A. The Officers went on to whitewash Burton Manor Villains.

Burton Manor Marauders kicked off the season with a 7-3 defeat of Weston Pioneers. Adrian Hough picked up a treble and Will Ferry and Ken Humphries doubles. The Pioneers also went down 9-1 to Stone for whom Paul Myatt and Brendan Sullivan were unbeaten. Lisa Brown gained the Pioneers consolation against Maurice Adams.
County Officers B are currently on top of division two following a 7-3 win against Weston Voyagers and draw against County Officers Saints. Nigel Cotton scored six of the best. The Voyagers recovered to beat County Officers Tapirs 6-4 despite a Nathan Phillips maximum. Alistair Wright posted four out of six for the Voyagers.
The Tapirs fared no better against Weston Eclipse going down 8-2, who in turn were defeated 9-1 by Uttoxeter TTC B. Dave Clark and Steve Jones collected a treble and Janine Illingworth a double. Best for the Eclipse was Luke Hough with four out of six.
Burton Manor Greys picked up two victories 6-4 and 8-2 against Burton Manor Avengers and Uttoxeter TTC C. Tim Presswood gained five out of six, Allan Cook four and Frank Chapman and Keith Mottershead two out of three. Best for the opposition was Roger Willetts with three wins and Gerald Crookes with two.
County Officers Saints beat County Officers C 7-3 despite an Alan Morris maximum. Luke Talbot, James Cotterill and Paul Douglas all returned a brace each.
Stone got their division one season off to a winning start 6-4 against Uttoxeter TTC A. Neil Hough was unbeaten for Stone while Roger Butler and Peter Drew replied with a pair each.
Weston Comets defeated Burton Manor Villains 8-2 for their first points of the campaign. Graham Fairhall and Glen Cowper both collected maximums.
