Week 2 Report Winter League 22-23

SDTTL Season 2022-3 Reports: Week 2

Premier Division

Top billing this week must go to the Rawreth A 6-3 win over Irons A for a number of reasons. Some great players on show and some really close games with the player of the match award going to Wanda Syderenko with three wins on her Rawreth debut. Wanda secured wins against Stuart Gibbs, Reece Seddon and a 11-9 in the 5th win over the returning Kevin Caldon (Great to see you back in league action – Kev). Syderenko was supported by Matt Spero with two wins and Kevin Read with a single victory.

Elsewhere a player of the match award and three wins for Simon Jacob was the difference as his Brand Identity A team overcame Rawreth C 6-3. Jacob was pushed all the way by Eric Green who replied with two wins for Rawreth. Babul Mcleod claiming the other points for Rawreth with a Richard Jackman brace and a win for David Jacob over Tim Cramphorn, the results to ensure a Brand Identity victory.

After their win over Rawreth C in week 1 Rayleigh Mill came back down to earth with a bump, suffering a 9-0 defeat at the hands of Thorpe Bay B. The ever-reliable trio of Kieran Skeggs, Gurj Bhambra and Rich Stubbington had too much on the night for the Mill’s Steve Maltby, Steve Sawyer and Sam Lowman.

Bhambra was in action twice this week as he also played up for Thorpe Bay A in their match against Rawreth B. The extra ‘table-time’ must have helped as he put in a player of the match performance beating Peter Barrett, Harry Keys and Kim Shead. His captain John Poysden did likewise and two wins for Joe Kennedy topped off an impressive 8-1 win for Thorpe Bay. There was a good win for Rawreth though as Peter Barrett beat Kennedy over 4 legs.

Division 1 (Week 1)

As a mark of respect in the light of the Funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, the very first scheduled game of the new season in Division 1, between Hockley B and Rawreth D, was cancelled. It will now be played at the end of the season.

The match between Rawreth E and Stanford A was a real ding-dong affair. Garry Hartgrove firstly overcame Peter Weatherall in four sets to set the home side 1-0 up; then the visitors’ Saad Abdullah made it 1-1 by overcoming Trevor Ward, and Rob Salvage made it 2-1 for Stanford. After that Trevor overcame Peter in five sets to level things at 2-2. From this point on, Rawreth had a bit of a surge, winning the next three rubbers to take an unassail position. However, Stanford were not done, taking the last two contests, leaving the home side 5-4 winners.

It looks like Brand Identity B will again this season be a force to be reckoned with. POM Barrie Delph and David Jacob returned maximums against home side Mapledene. The Mapledene squad of Andy Seaman, Mike Johnston and Bill Smith each recorded single successes.

Invicta A have been boosted by the return of Steven Marr. His two and a maximum from the man of the match Tony Ayliffe gave the home side a 5 – 4 victory over Lentern. John Tendler was Lentern’s most successful player winning two, whilst Martin Archie and Peter Lucraft managed one apiece.

A somewhat depleted Canvey A team played hosts to Hockley C. Despite a sterling effort from Dan Kellard and his teammates, the visitors were too strong and came away with all the points in a 9-0 win. Joerg Poeschus was the Player of the Match, mathematically turning in a slightly better set of results than his colleagues Harry Sawford and Aaryan Vatsa.

Division 2

Hadleigh Forum C and Wakering fought out a close encounter ending in the home side clinching the match in the last game of the evening to give them a 5-4 win. Mark Everard won the final game for Hadleigh, but it was David Thomas who was the hero winning all his games and losing just one set on the night. Whilst the match result was close, surprisingly most of the matches weren’t, the only one going to five sets being Stewart Mills win over Satwant Gill. Mark Everard finished with a brace for Hadleigh whilst Paul England won two for Wakering and Stewart and Andy Deadman one each.

The encounter between Runnymede and Selbourne went the same way as the Hadleigh match, again finishing with a last game win for Andrew Humphris to clinch a 5-4 win for Runnymede. Andrew took the POTM award with his hat trick and he was supported by a brace from Tina Hutchinson. Jenne Seibolt also won two for Selbourne whilst Steve Webster and Ross Letham weighed in with a point apiece.

Hullbridge A fell to their second 9-0 defeat of the season at the experienced hands of RESSC. Their team of John Holland, Richard Gill and Bob Skews proving far too strong for their opponents. There was however a spirited performance from Jack Riley who took a set off Bob and just lost the fourth 12-10. All the other games finished in three sets.

Division 3

A busy week in Division 3 with five scheduled matches.

** One match wasn’t played, due to a misunderstanding:

Hockley ‘D’ v Rawreth ‘G.

Rawreth G (Rawreth Juniors) have in past Seasons, played all their matches (Home & Away) at home, due to the young ages of their team. All Captains in this Division were contacted last week and to date all are happy to play their Home Matches against Rawreth G at the MegaCentre. The non-played match between Hockley D & Rawreth G will be played at the end of the Season.

As far as the action was concerned, maximums for Dan Stewart and youngster Alexander Deacon saw Hullbridge ‘B’ record their first win with a 6-3 victory over Invicta ‘C’.  There was 1 win each for David Youngman, Jonathan Gould and Brendan Raja for the home side.

Skipper Mark Farley was the hat-trick hero for Stanford ‘C’ in their 6-3 away win at Hockley ‘E’.  He was ably supported by teammates Randy Santiago with 2 wins and Jack Diver with 1 win.  Ben Cook was the best player on the night for Hockley recording 2 wins.

Megazone followed up their first week victory with another convincing 7-2 win, this time at the expense of Invicta ‘B.’  Jonathan Allen was the Man of the Match with a maximum, although he was pushed all the way by the experienced David Barnes before getting over the line at 11/9 in the final end.  Jonathan’s teammates, Amar Al-Soufi and newcomer Steve McQuillan gave him good support with 2 wins each, although both were unable to get the better of David.

Finally, Hadleigh Forum ‘D’ were only able to field 2 players in their match away to Canvey ‘C’, for whom Che Martin, Stephen Parker and player of the match, Trevor Hayes recorded maximums in a 9-0 victory.  Jean Catley came closest to winning a point for her side losing a very close 5-setter to Stephen.
