WL 14-15 WEEK 17 REPORT

Southend & District Table Tennis League 2014-5 Winter Season

Week 17 REPORT,  Week Commencing 11th January 2015

Premier Division - DRS Duncan Taylor        duncan.taylor@essexcc.gov.uk

Week 15 in the Premier division saw Castle Point’s Steve Tilson gain a maximum and revenge for his earlier season defeat to Rawreth B’s Keith Phillips, in his side’s 6-3 win. Simon Jacob played well to take two for Castle Point also beating Keith in 4 but he had no answer to Eric Green who scored two for the home side.  Next a story of two Mills, Rayleigh Mill’s Russell Mills, who on returning from injury was very unlucky to lose two epic five setters, including a loss to Warehouse A’s Kim Shead having been 8-2 up in the fifth. Two wins from Martin West to back up Kim’s hat-trick secured a narrow 5-4 win for the Warehouse.  Thorpe Bay A registered a good 7-2 win over Lentern A to keep up their title challenge with maximums from John Monk and Paul Sayer. Lentern's two wins came courtesy of wins over Paul Whatton from Lewis Ewers and the returning Charlie Bates    Duncan

Division 1 - DRS - Barrie Delf                        bdelf@castlepoint.gov.uk

Lentern B secured a hard fought 5-4 win against a Customs A side depleted by illness. Roy Thomas secured three points for the Customs side whilst Paul Churn and Gus Heath both beat Dave Morgan. Customs other point of the evening came in the final game when Dave's timely edges just got the better of John Lott's nets.  As I have not received the Canvey B result yet, Rawreth E took advantage and moved into 2nd spot with a 7-2 win over Lentern C. The Father and son combination of Steve and Chris Buer were too much for the experienced heads of Lentern and they finished undefeated. John Blackman added the final point against a winless Malcolm Henstock, Mike Grout and Les Tayler winning the consolation points for Lentern C who drop into 4th place.  In the mid-table clash between Canvey A and Hockley A, Canvey only having 2 players immediately put them under pressure. With Tim Pang undefeated for the home side and Liam Squirrell getting the better of Gavin Warner, the three points conceded made all the difference with the Hockley side winning 6-3. Terry

Giddens did put up some resistance scoring two for the Canvey side but could not get the better of Tim, although Gavin did take him to the fifth set.  Hadleigh Forum C stabilized their mid-table position with a good 7-2 win over the youngsters (and one oldie) from Hullbridge D. Mark Everard scored 3 and was ably supported by Tony Mace and Dave Thomas with 2 each, however, neither of the supporting players could beat Zoe Davis who picked up the 2 points for Hullbridge. In a close game further down the table, Lentern E had a good 5-4 win over Invicta A in a match where no-one was unbeaten. Mike Worship, Brian Spencer, Steve Marr and Neil Daines all scored two each and it was left to Wayne Farmer to score the crucial point to gain victory over Barrie Murphy, however, Wayne was unlucky in his other two matches losing both in 5 sets.  Finally, Warehouse B had a narrow 5-4 victory over Lentern D despite a hattrick from Peter Pond. Two each from Tarun Goel and Tony Wright and one from Phil Puckey was enough to see the Warehouse side home    Barrie

Division 2 - DRS - David Barnes                    dbarnes89@btinternet.com

This week sees catch-up on a lot of the outstanding results.  An Andy Deadman hat trick helped Rawreth G to a much-needed 6 – 3 away win at Hullbridge F. James McDowell pitched in with two wins, whilst Joanna Hills got two of the home team’s points.  Unfortunately the Rawreth side couldn’t continue their winning ways, next succumbing at home 6 – 3 to Castle Point C, thanks mainly to a maximum from the visitors’ Richard Riebold and two from Colin Smith. Andy Deadman again shone with two wins for the home side. Lastly, the Rawreth youngsters entertained a much-experienced RESSC side. Experience got the better of youth, with the visitors winning 6 – 3. Andy again won two, but a Ron Coutts hat trick and two wins for Frank Hooper did the damage. Hullbridge F then suffered the same fate (another 6 – 3 defeat) at the hands of Runnymede. Phil Digby and Steve Giles were undefeated for the visitors.  Second place Runnymede followed this up with an impressive 8 – 1 win at Canvey C. Phil French and Dmitry Kisil were undefeated, whilst Gordon Johnstone saved the home team’s blushes.  Hullbridge E fared slightly better than their club colleagues. Firstly, away to Warehouse D, despite a maximum from the host’s Dave Walton, they edged the fixture 5 – 4. Sue Reece and Bob Shingleton-Smith both won two games each. Unfortunately though, they followed this up with a 9 – 0 home drubbing at the hands of Basildon Hospital. Mike Smith, Sid Hills and Kevin Smart were all too hot for the home side to handle. ‘Hospital were then brought down to earth when next they visited leaders Hockley B. Two wins each from Dennis Squirrell, Matt Stringer and Josh Copeland gave the home side a 6 – 3 win, despite Basildon’s Kevin Smart winning all his games.  A close fought match between Warehouse C and Castle Point B saw the visitors edge a 5 – 4 win. Martin Roberts was undefeated for the visitors with Tony Ayliffe supporting him with two wins. Tamas Mezo, playing up from Division 3, did well to win two for the home side.  The match between Castle Point C and Warehouse D ended up a 6 – 3 home win. This time Paul Thompson was the hero, winning all his games. John Beddow chipped in with two wins    David

DIVISION 3 - DRS Paul Strutt                        paulstrut@tiscali.co.uk

In a re-arranged game Hockley C went back to the top of the table with a solid 7-2 win against Customs B with man of the match Stuart Adshead leading the way with a hat-trick supported by 2 wins each from Matt Nariel and Jon Knight. Amar Al-Soufi provided the main opposition with two wins but he was defeated in straight sets by Stuart.  In the first of 3 matches for Hockley D they just lost out 5-4 to Rawreth I coming back from 4-0 down to 4-3, but it was man of the match Robbie Appleton who cinched the vital game against Brian Parker to give them a 5-3 winning lead. Robbie was supported by wins from Samuel Nunn and Botond Mezo whilst Jason Stringer won 2 and John Jolley and Brian Parker 1 each for Hockley. In their first match of the New Year Hockley then came completely unstuck against Warehouse D losing 5 games on the trot to go from 2-2 to a 7-2 defeat. Tamas Mezo and Simon Lisner recorded hat-tricks for Warehouse with dad Larry Lisner chipping in with his first win of the season. 5 of the games went to 4 sets with Philip Pond and David Cross bagging a point each for Hockley. In their third match they met their own E team and managed to reverse the previous scoreline winning 7-2 but in a very close fought match. 5 games went to 5 sets and 4 games to 4 sets and it was Philip Pond who walked away with a hat-trick with John Jolley and Jason Stringer both winning 2. Ron Rogerson scored both points for the E team. Spare a thought though for Claire Stringer who lost two of her matches in 5 sets and was then faced with having to play her husband Jason which she lost in straight sets. With hindsight Jason, maybe you should have taken it a bit easier!  Hullbridge G were another team with 3 results to report but starting unfortunately with a defeat which ended their 6 match winning run, losing 6-3 to Warehouse E. Tamas Mezo was in fine form for Warehouse winning all 3 of his games including coming back from 2-0 down against Adam Jackman while teammate Mike Webb clinched another 5 setter11-9 in the final game against Reece Harris-Griffiths. Warehouse were 3-1 down at one stage. Hullbridge then returned to winning ways beating Hockley E 8-1 and a 2 man Customs B team 7-2. Adam Jackman and Kieran Stanley both recorded hat-tricks against Hockley with James Goddard winning 2 and Adam was unbeaten again against Customs along with David Zeffie    Paul
