Week 16 REPORT

Week Commencing 4th January 2015

Premier Division - DRS Duncan Taylor        duncan.taylor@essexcc.gov.uk

After the festive break it was back to business in the Southend District Table Tennis League. In the Premier division wins for Martin West, Martin Turner and Kim Shead led to a vital victory for Warehouse A over Hullbridge B for whom Fred Dove remained undefeated and Sid Dorn recorded a win over Martin Turner.  Leaders Rawreth A started 2015 well with an 8-1 win over their C team, Reece Seddon continuing to  make his mark in the division with  a great win over Adam Brewer. It was a busy week for Reece as he also stepped up to play for the B team as they faced Rayleigh Mill. Duncan Taylor survived 3 match points to overcome Bruce Kettle and claim three wins for the Mill but with only a Steve Sawyer win over Kettle to add to that the Mill went down 5-4, Keith Phillips and Seddon with two apiece for Rawreth.  Hullbridge A - Runnymede saw off Thorpe Bay B 9-0 in an impressive performance which included a man of the match performance from Sam Hume who won his three games against Keiran Skeggs, Gurj Bhambra and Richard Stubbington    Duncan

With the Christmas break over (weeks 14 & 15), Lentern B got back to winning ways taking advantage of the rest week for Hadleigh Forum B, taking a 6-3 victory against Hadleigh Forum C and extending their lead at the top. Lentern did not have it all their own way however, with Russell Bright unbeaten for the Forum team. Unfortunately, without any more wins, Lentern scored 2 each to secure a solid team victory.  Lentern C outgunned the winless Canvey B team with an 8-1 victory to push them into 3rd position and leave the Canvey second string adrift at the bottom of the table. Mike Grout and Les Tayler were unbeaten, with Lee McGonagle scoring the sole Canvey win over Chris Crooks.  Rawreth E continued their recent winning form with a close 5-4 victory over Invicta A. Steve Marr was in inspired form and no-one could beat him on the night and was unlucky to be on the losing side, but with 2 wins each for Justin Jeffery and Colin Clements, it was left to Colin Barham to add the extra point for the team win in a close 5 set win over Michael Piper.  Customs A suffered a rare 5-4 loss against a strong Warehouse B team who managed to turn up at the right venue on the right night! (They were at home though). Despite Roy Thomas securing his normal 3 and Dale Gutteridge with 1, it was 4-4 coming into the last game with Tarun Goel and Tony Wright scoring 2 each for the Warehouse Team. Berti was able to secure a 3-1 win over Dave Morgan to earn the team their victory.  Lentern D were another team who secured a close 5-4 victory against Canvey A for their first victory since November in a match where no-one was unbeaten. Peter Pond and Peter Lucraft scoring two each for the Lentern side, with Ray Wilson scoring 2 for Canvey, everyone else chipped in with one game.  In the final game this week, an experienced Lentern E side scored a 5-4 victory over the youngsters of Hullbridge D. ‘Funny rubber’ players, Mike Worship and Brian Spencer  scored 2 each for the Lentern side, but neither was able to beat Sam Lowman who remained unbeaten for Hullbridge, his second maximum in 4 games    Barrie

Division 2 - DRS - David Barnes                    dbarnes89@btinternet.com

Wakering edged a close game 5 - 4 at home to Warehouse C. A hat trick from Danny Baker was not enough to give the visitors victory. Paul England and Nigel Cook took two games each for Wakering and Dave Accleton’s single victory made the difference.  After their close encounter at Wakering, Warehouse C succumbed to Runnymede 9 – 0, thanks to maximums from the two Philips (French and Digby) and Dmitry Kisil.  Paul Ogden’s single victory saved Hullbridge E’s red faces, in an 8 – 1 reversal at Castle Point B. Tony Ayliffe and Martin Roberts were undefeated for the home side    David
