There was an enjoyable evening of table tennis as Rawreth D recorded their first win in the Premier division against Warehouse A. There was a hard fought hat trick for Chris Nunn and a return to the league after a 15 year absence for Mike Hayes who won the other two: Kim Shead claiming a brace for the Warehouse. A tighter game than the score suggests as Thorpe Bay A beat Rayleigh Mill 6-3 with four of the first five games going the distance. There was a good win for Colin Chatfield over John Monk and two wins for Duncan Taylor but neither could overcome man of the match Paul Whatton who was back to his hard-hitting best. Lentern A had no trouble recording a win over Hadleigh Forum, Wale Bada and Terry Guymer with three wins each and Lewis Ewers with two. John Tendler proving the resistance for the Forum. Another 8-1 win came for Castle Point A over Hullbridge C with Barrie Delf in good form and a good win for Andy Seaman over Simon Jacob. The Hullbridge derby between their A and B side resulted in a 7-2 win for the A-team. Kevin Caldon as expected won his three but there were good wins for the B team's Fred Dove and Gary Young over Stuart Gibbs and Richard Brown respectively Duncan

Hadleigh Forum B jumped back to the top of the table after a strong 7-2 win over Warehouse B. Mick Tappenden and Dave Woolmer were unbeaten for the Forum side but both Berti and Jim Stait got the better of Anthon. Next week’s match against 2nd placed Lentern B may go some way to determine the winners of this Division. Lentern B remain in 2nd place, 4 points behind but with a game in hand, thanks to a close 5-4 win over their C team. In a match that no-one was unbeaten, Gus Heath and Paul Churn scored 2 for the B’s, with Mike Grout and Chris Crooks doing the same for the C team. It was John Lott’s decisive win over the pointless Les Tayler that enabled them to take the victory. There was then 4 games that were won 6-3, with the winners being Customs A, Rawreth E, Hullbridge D & Lentern E over Hadleigh Forum C, Hockley A, Invicta A and Lentern D respectively. Customs had Roy Thomas (3) and Dave Morgan (2) to thank for their win over Hadleigh Forum C. Rawreth E put in a real team effort to all score two, but no-one was able to beat Tim Pang for the Hockley visitors. Hullbridge D had Sam (3) and Simon Lowman (2) to thank for their win over Invicta A who had Neil Daines scoring two. Sam Fullick scored a great win over Michael Piper for his first Division 1 win, to add to the Hullbridge score. Finally, Mike Worship (3) and Wayne Farmer (2) helped the Lentern E team to victory over the D team, who had Dave Kirston scoring 2. Final match of the week was the all Canvey affair, A v B teams. The A team came out close 5-4 winners thanks to two each from Terry Giddens and Gavin Warner, Tony Westwell unbeaten for the B side and beating all his higher level team mates. In a close match, leaders Hockley B just got the better of Runnymede, edging it 5 – 4. Two wins each for Dennis Squirrell and Paul Strutt, plus one for Matt Stringer gave Hockley the bragging rights, despite two each for Phil Digby and Dmitry Kisil. This was the second narrow defeat for Runnymede in the space of four days. Earlier they lost 5 – 4 at home to Basildon Hospital. A Kevin Smart treble, supported by one each from Mike Smith and Clive Beauchamp did the damage. Dmitry Kisil again one two for Runnymede, as did Tony Coeshall. Second place Castle Point B closed the gap on Hockley with a fine 7 – 2 home win over Wakering. A hat-trick from Keith Neville and two wins each for Martin Roberts and Tony Ayliffe did the damage. Stewart Mills got both Wakering’s points. Despite some close games, experience prevailed over youthful energy as home team Hullbridge E handed the youngsters of Rawreth G a 7 – 2 defeat. James McDowell got both wins for the visitors, whilst Hullbridge’s Sue Reece won all her games. There were two wins each for both Paul Ogden and Ann Lane. A maximum from Micky Baker and two from Jonathan Allen helped give Warehouse C a 6 – 3 win over Canvey C. Geoff Banthorpe won two for Canvey David

One outstanding match from week 8 to report on and it saw the very experienced Rawreth H team beat their own, very young, I team 8-1. Dave Barnes and Ken Field both scored hat-tricks supported by a brace for Pat Townsley, while Robbie Appleton picked up the consolation point for the youngsters. Warehouse E had the easiest match of the week being given a walkover by Rawreth H, who were unable to field a team, and this has moved them up to 3rd in the league. Canvey D got the better of Hockley E with Ray Baker winning his 3 and the man of the match award leading his team to a 6-3 victory. He was supported by Simon Baker with 2 and 1 from John Smith. Ron Rogerson picked up 2 for Hockley plus 1 for Claire Stringer. An even closer match at Hullbridge G as the home side just edged out Hockley D 5-4. 3-1 down at one stage this was a good win for Hullbridge’s youngest youngsters with 11 year old Daniel Zeffie coming back from 7-10 down in the fifth set against David Cross to win 12-10 and level the match at 4-4. 11 year old Reece Harris- Griffiths then won the decider. 11 year old James Goddard also chalked up his first win in the Winter League. David Cross and Phil Pond both picked up 2 for Hockley. At the end of week 9 Hockley C lead the table with 43 points two ahead of Invicta B, who have played a game more, with Warehouse E in third on 33 points Paul
