A good performance from Lee Prentice on a rare outing for Rawreth A helped his side to an 8-1 win over Warehouse A to consolidate their place at the top of the Premier division. The game also saw a good 5 set win for Martin Turner over Rawreth captain Charles Sweeny. Dick Wyman and Maxine Abbott scoring 5th end wins over Dave Calleja for Hullbridge's two points against Rawreth B. Maximums for Rawreth's Eric Green and Keith Phillips securing the match for their side. Good wins for Richard Brown over Minda Sinkus and Sam Hume over Steve Maltby along with a Stuart Gibbs hattrick saw Hullbridge A beat Rayleigh Mill 6-3. It was 14 year old Sam's first win in the top flight but it certainly won't be his last as he impressed with a solid game and great temperament. The final two games this week saw two 7-2 score lines. Lentern A beat Rawreth C 7-2 with Ben Warner beating Wale Bada and Lewis Ewers but even he couldn't get the better of the impressive Terry Guymer. Elsewhere, Richard Jackman was in great form as he took Castle Point's two wins in a 7-2 defeat to Thorpe Bay A as he recorded wins against John Poysden and Alex Abbott    Duncan

Match of the week that could have a huge bearing on final positions was 2nd v 1st, Lentern B v Hadleigh Forum B. In the end, with both Gus Heath and Paul Churn unbeaten for the home side, Lentern ran out 6-3 winners. Dave Woolmer was unlucky with his games which all went to 5 sets but only managing to beat John Lott, who returned pointless for the Lentern side. This now leaves Lentern B one point behind with a game in hand and the title well and truly in their own hands. Rawreth E have been making good progress in recent weeks and are now 3rd in the table after a slow start to the season and were further boosted this week by a 7-2 win over Canvey A. Steve Buer and Justin Jeffery were both unbeaten and unusually, Peter Cray was unable to win any points although two games did go to 5 sets. Hockley A suffered a second defeat this week losing 7-2 to Lentern E. Mike Worship has added to the depth and experience for Lentern and was untroubled by any of the Hockley players. With Wayne Farmer and Brian Spencer adding two each, it was left to the youngsters of Hockley Liam Squirrell and Matt Stringer to win one apiece. Warehouse B added to Canvey B problems with a 7-2 win, thanks to 3 from Tarun Goel and 2 each from Tony Wright and Phil Puckey. Peter Cray added two to the Canvey score but could not overcome Tarun, losing a close match in the 5th set 13-11. Lentern C maintained their good record with a 6-3 win over Hullbridge D. Les Tayler proved unstoppable with 3 for Lentern, although Zoe Davies took 2 for Hullbridge and pushed Les all the way losing 11-13 in the fifth set. Hullbridge threatened at 3-2 but Lentern’s experience took the final 4 matches to win 6-3. The final report received was another Lentern v Hadleigh Forum clash, this time D v C. Hadleigh Forum managed to run out the winners in this one, with Russell Bright (3) and Dave Thomas (2) doing the main damage, Peter Pond (2) putting up the resistance for the Lentern D side    Barrie

It was a tough few days for Warehouse D. First they went to Basildon Hospital. Maximums from the home side’s Dean Baker, Sid Hills and Clive Beauchamp sent them home pointless in a 9 – 0 defeat. Next they entertained Hockley B, who inflicted an 8 – 1 defeat on them. Maximums from young Matt Stringer and (not so-young) Dennis Squirrell and two from Paul Strutt gave them a comfortable win. Dave Walton saved Warehouse’s blushes. Basildon Hospital followed up their success earlier on with a 6 – 3 away win at Wakering. Mike Smith won all his games with Dean Baker winning two and Sid Hills one. Paul Ogden’s hat trick was the mainstay in Hullbridge E’s 6 – 3 away win at RESSC. Paul was assisted with two wins from Bob Shingleton-Smith and one from Sue Reece. Sarah Mapes won two for the home side and Frank Hooper their remaining point. In a close match, leaders Hockley B just got the better of Runnymede, edging it 5 – 4. Two wins each for Dennis Squirrell and Paul Strutt, plus one for Matt Stringer gave Hockley the bragging rights, despite two each for Phil Digby and Dmitry Kisil. This was the second narrow defeat for Runnymede in the space of four days. Earlier they lost 5 – 4 at home to Basildon Hospital. A Kevin Smart treble, supported by one each from Mike Smith and Clive Beauchamp did the damage. Dmitry Kisil again won two for Runnymede, as did Tony Coeshall. Second place Castle Point B closed the gap on Hockley with a fine 7 – 2 home win over Wakering. A hat-trick from Keith Neville and two wins each for Martin Roberts and Tony Ayliffe did the damage. Stewart Mills got both Wakering’s points. Despite some close games, experience prevailed over youthful energy as home team Hullbridge E handed the youngsters of Rawreth G a 7 – 2 defeat. James McDowell got both wins for the visitors, whilst Hullbridge’s Sue Reece won all her games. There were two wins each for both Paul Ogden and Ann Lane. A maximum from Micky Baker and two from Jonathan Allen helped give Warehouse C a 6 – 3 win over Canvey C. Geoff Banthorpe won two for Canvey    David

Only two games to report on this week and in the first promotion hopefuls Customs B were forced to field a 2 man team against Canvey D and were subsequently edged out 5-4 but the man of the match award went to Amar Al-Soufi who won all his games in straight sets with Richard Kidd picking up the other point. Stuart Curham and John Smith got the vital points for Canvey with John winning the crucial 5th point for Canvey defeating Richard in 5 sets. In the other game Warehouse E and Rawreth J met on mutual home soil at the Warehouse and it was a case of old against new although both sides had players new to the league. It turned out to be Warehouse E’s night though with Mike Webb scoring 2 wins and Bradley Atkinson achieving a hat-trick on his league debut. Steve Chaffey got the other point.
