SDTTL Summer League  2014

Week 2 Report from Chris Jacob

In Division 1 of the Southend & District summer league Lentern “A” have increased their lead with an 8-1 victory over Castle Point “A” thanks to maximums from Kevin Read and Ben Warner, Barrie Delf picked up the solitary point for the Council with a good win in the fifth set against Ian Rattray. Hullbridge “A” have also started well with two victories, in the all Hullbridge clash against the “C” team Matt Rolfe and Sid Dorn were unbeaten in ensuring that the “A” team got the bragging rights in the local derby and in the 7-2 victory over Kingswood there were lots of close games with Matt Rolfe again unbeaten but the result that sticks out in this game is Maxine Abbott’s 16-18 win in the fifth set over the awkward combination bat player Colin Clements. This was obviously a win for the short pimples over the long variety !!.  The only other result this week in this Division was a close 5-4 victory for Hullbridge “C” over Warehouse “A” in a game where no one remained unbeaten on the night, although Maxine Abbott of Hullbridge and Martin West of Warehouse were unbeaten in their singles
After their 8-1 victory over Kingswood “B” this week, Bluehouse are now 8 points clear at the top of Division 2, the one that got away from them was a victory for the aforementioned Colin Clements over the reigning over 70’s champion, Dave Kirston. There was a close 5-4 victory for Hockley “A” over Invicta “A”, Tim Pang made the difference on his debut in this game although he did lose one of his doubles playing with Keith Abbott, 13-11 in the fifth against David Barnes and Michael Piper of Invicta.
The team currently top of Division 3, Hullbridge “E” played against the team at the bottom, Hockley “B” and the result was an 8-1 victory for the leaders, the point they lost was a victory for Jon Knight over Sam Fullick. There was a close game between Castle Point “B” and RESSC in which the Council team just lost 5-4 in a game that no one remained unbeaten although Mick Worship tipped the balance for the victors by winning all of his singles.
Basildon Hospital are continuing their winning ways in Division 4 and this week they beat Hockley “C” 8-1, in what appears to have been a one sided game. Laurie Witte gained the point for Hockley with a three straight victory over Gill Smith by the scores of 8, 9, and 1. Gill then got her revenge by a similar score against Paul Seymour winning 8, 5, and 1 !!. Invicta “B” also won 8-1 this week against Hullbridge “F” with the Hullbridge pair of Harry Harwood and Reece Harris-Griffiths beating Mike Keeble and Matt Keeble in the last doubles by the score of 11-9, 12-14, 10-12 and 11-13. John Golding was unbeaten on the night for Invicta. In the final result received this week Warehouse “C” had a 7-2 victory over Canvey “C” although the score could have been a lot closer as Warehouse won three of their games close in the 5th set. Steve Bottom remained unbeaten for the Warehouse team.
