National Junior League

After some discussion during the closed season about whether the NJL was even going to run this season at Waterside TTC, it was good to get there for the first meeting today and find 2 divisions with 6 teams in each. Our A team was placed in division 1 and our new B team in division 2. This was great from the perspective of our B team who are all 13 & 14 years old as it meant that they were more likely to meet teams of a similar standard. The reports from the 2 teams follow:

Winchester A

First game vs Southampton A arguably the strongest team at the competition.

Dom Goddard played Will Poulter lost 0-3 but very close 3rd game 16-14

Danny Klingers first NJL appearance 1-3 vs Ben Poulter was a difficult and close match.

Olly Kierans lost to Jared Schaller 0-3 and went very close with Ben Poulter but lost 1-3

Second match against Weymouth was a closer affair 2-4 overall and Olly winning both his matches. Danny taking Josh Clarke close 1-3

Third match vs Kidlington B we were convincingly beaten 1-5 followed by a complete turn around against Generation II winning

5-1 a superb win from all players and Danny's first NJL win playing in Div 1 a real baptism of fire but held his own very well.

The last game was against Kidlington A which was also a 0-6 but was closer than the score suggests. Olly losing 2-3 and1-3.

Well done boys, better luck in the next match.

Winchester B

Winchester B took their squad of 4 players and played them in rotation.

The first match was against Southampton B, a team similar to ours with former NCL players such as Joe Watkins & Russell Hasan who are well know to our players. We won 4-2 with Ed winning both his games 3:0 and Blake & Will winning one game each.

The second match was against Weymouth B. We won 5-1 with Ed & Blake winning both their games and Ethan narrowly missing out on a second win losing to Jess Muggeridge in 5.

The third match was against Basingstoke, eventual overall winners. We lost 2-4 with Ethan & Will winning one game apiece.

The fourth match was against Kiddlington C, eventual runners up. Again we lost 2-4 with Blake & Ethan winning one game apiece.

The fifth match was against Kiddlington D and effectively a third place playoff as we had won just one more game than them going into the final round, We drew 3-3 with Blake, Ethan & Will winning one game apiece.

All in all a very good result as we finished third out of six. Even where games were lost these were often over 4 or 5 sets with players fighting back when even 2-0 down. The boys should be commended for their performance, determination & enthusiasm today.
