Dear Player,

Please find attached your entry form and rules for the Singles Super League which was successfully introduced by the South Devon and Torbay Table Tennis League last season.

For those new to the league, it is your chance to compete on an individual basis against other players of similar standard (even your team-mates!) in mini-leagues to be played over one evening in the weeks specified in your handbook.

This season, the majority of the event will be staged at Torbay Leisure Centre, playing on up to 12 brand new tables. This will give table tennis in the bay a great opportunity to be viewed by members of the general public and perhaps encourage others to take up the sport. However, due to the fact that Torbay Leisure Centre is unavailable the week commencing 27th October, the first round will be played at Brixham Community Sports Centre between Wednesday 29th and Friday 31st October (Divisions 1-4 will play on Thursday 30th, Divisions 5-8 on Wednesday 29th, and the remaining divisions on Friday 31st). This will be for the first round only. Subsequent rounds will always be played on the Thursday of the weeks allocated for the Singles Super League (see handbook) at Torbay Leisure Centre. These dates are:

11th December, 5th February, 19th March, and 16th April.

The format will be the same as last season, i.e. five players to a division according to ability, all play all, with the top two players winning promotion for the next round and the bottom two players relegated. Unlike last year however, there will be a fifth round where everyone will be playing for trophies in the divisions relevant to their ranking based on their total of points won through the previous four rounds. The cost to enter will be £11. The first round at Brixham Community Sports Centre will commence at 7:30pm prompt, and each subsequent round at Torbay Leisure Centre will commence at 7:00pm prompt.

For those who didn’t enter last season, please note that if you enter you will be playing four matches each evening against players of around your own standard so you will be ensured of a good level of competition in excellent playing conditions and on brand new equipment. So don’t hesitate, enter and enjoy!!!

The closing date for entries is Tuesday 28th October 2014.

Note that spaces will be limited, so entries will be accepted on a “first come, first served” basis.

Please send your entries to the address specified on the entry form. In addition, you can email me (Alan Maynard) at this email address to inform me of your intention to enter so leagues can be drawn up in advance.

Also, please feel free to print out the entry form to your team-mates who do not have email.

Many thanks…. Alan.

Singles Super League ~  Rules  ~

The Singles Super League has been set up as an addition to the South Devon & Torbay Table Tennis team league for any player wishing to compete on an individual basis against other players of similar standard. The following sections outline the agreed rules.

The league will take place over five sessions starting in October and finishing in April.

1.  League Structure

The league will consist of a number of divisions (decided by the number of entrants). Each division will consist of five players of similar standard.

2.  Order of Play

Players in each division will play all other players in the same division over five sets as follows:

3.  Points System

Players will be awarded one point for a win. At the end of the session, all players’ points will be tallied up. The player with the most points will claim first position, the next, second position, and so forth. League positions for any players on the same points will be decided on the games won between those players. If positions are still undecided after this (that is, all players concerned have beaten each other), then a count-back of sets between the players involved will decide. If after this, positions are still undecided, a count-back of points scored will decide.

4.  Promotion and Relegation

The top two players from Division 2 down will be promoted into the next highest division. The bottom two players will be relegated into the next lowest division. For the lowest division, the bottom two players will miss the next session and players waiting to enter will fill their spaces.

5.  “Division Factor” and Rankings

Each division will be given a “division factor”. This will start with x1 for the lowest division and increase incrementally for each higher division (x2, x3, etc). At the end of week one, each player will have their score multiplied by their respective division factor. This will happen again after week 2, 3 and 4. At the end of week 4, each player will have accumulated points and have a ranking reflective of their standard. The organisers will calculate the rankings and once complete, the players can be divided again into groups of five to play for a trophy within each graded group (to be decided). The rankings will also be used for handicapping purposes (for example, for the Early Season Tournament) and selection for national team events representing the South Devon & Torbay League.

6.  Venue and Dates

The Singles Super League will be played on the designated weeks as shown in the league handbook. They will be played on Thursday evenings at Torbay Leisure Centre except for the first round which will be played at Brixham Community Sports Centre on the Wednesday, Thursday and/or Friday depending on entry numbers.

7.  Cost

The cost per player will be £11 to be paid in advance. Any funds remaining after paying rental costs will be divided between South Devon & Torbay Table Tennis League and Brixham Table Tennis Club.

8.  Non-attendance

•        Any player failing to be present for their session will be relegated.

•        Any player unable to attend the session must contact the organisers as soon as possible so that a substitute can be used.

•        Any player, who fails to inform the organisers of non-attendance or fails to be present for two sessions, will not be allowed to enter the Singles Super League the following season.
