SOUTH DEVON & TORBAY TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE – SPONSORED BY ALBANY FLORISTS

PRESS REPORT – Sunday 2nd Feb

It was cup week in the Albany Florists sponsored South Devon Torbay Table Tennis League with the eight quarter-finalists now determined in the Team Handicap Singles Challenge Cup.  A convincing 379-273 victory by the fast-improving youngsters from Torbay Academy 3 over the Torre Panthers means it looks like they are the team to beat this season.  The holders Torbay Academy 1 are still in the mix with the remaining teams all coming from Newton Abbot TTC.

NA Owls 370-312 victory over first division Halwell has earned them a quarter final tie with NA Falcons.  In another all Newton Abbot tie the Condors will take on the Eagles.  The NA Kites have the ominous task of trying to stop the Academy 3 youngsters, having just scraped past the Academy’s second team in the previous round 348-346.  The final tie sees the holders Torbay Academy 1 take on NA Hawks.

There were several games in the Dyment Doubles Handicap Shield competition, which is at an earlier stage. There were big wins for NA Eagles and Torbay Academy 3 while the rest of the encounters threw up some close matches.  First Division NA Eagles, Andy Tyrrell, Jim McIvor and Dan Webster-Hall, were too strong for fourth division Torbay Academy 6, winning 406-301, as were the Torbay Academy 3 team of Kacper Piwowar, Ivan Vaplaks and Jamie McGuire who dominated throughout in their 326-232 victory over Dawlish Dynamos.  Third Division NA Kites, still in both competitions, had a fine 317-287 victory over Torbay Academy 5. The Kites’ Andy Guy, Quillan Wilson and Derek Stratton not pulling away until the eighth set.  Cup specialists of the past, the Taverners, Geoff Read, Colin Harrop and Martin Dilkes progressed to the next round at the expense of Torbay Academy 4, 355-330.  NA Kestrels, struggling in the league, sprung a surprise with an excellent win over first division Halwell. Dale Fabian, Rob Williams and Bruce Freeman combining well to defeat the Halwell boys 308-284. In an all second division clash the Marldon team of George Breyley, Helen Glover and Ed Thompson got the better of Brixham Trawlers 372-312.

There were a handful of re-arranged league matches in the first and second divisions.  NA Buzzards hit the top of the first division following a 9-1 win over Brixham Gulls but their club colleagues, the Batmen in the runners-up spot, have two matches in hand. Kevin Nicholls and Nick Halse were unbeaten for the Buzzards, with skipper Sonja Ryland just dropping the one set to Mick Mercer.  Halwell had a busy week playing a cup match and two league matches. They had varying fortunes in the league going down 2-8 to NA Condors but recovering to defeat Brixham Pirates by the same score. Dave Wadling and Rod Sugden with maximums for Halwell against the Pirates and Giles Tushingham and Mark Burridge being unbeaten for the Condors against Halwell.

It’s so close at the top of the second division that Denbury Tykes’ four points collected in defeat by the Taverners took them briefly to the top of the table. Struggling Taverners, who have propped up the table this season, always looked better than their league position, their latest 6-4 victory has lifted them up to seventh in the table.  Brixham Trawlers emphatic 9-1 at Newton Abbot against the Hawks ensured Tykes stay at the top of the table lasted just a few days as the Trawlers have now gone four points clear. Alan Maynard and Ian Saxby with maximums, well supported by Nick Williamson as they gave the Hawks the run-around.
