ALBANY FLORISTS-SPONSORED SOUTH DEVON & TORBAY TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE

There was nothing to choose between the top two challengers to Torbay Academy 1 for the First Division title. Brixham Sharks, with new signing Rory Harries in top form, drew with NA Batmen 5-5. Harries was unbeaten all night and was joined by Adam Shipway in a scintillating final doubles against the Gibbs’ Dennis & Shaun which went to 11-9 in the fifth and earned the Sharks the draw. The two Torbay Academy sides met with the anticipated victory to the 1st team 7-3, Kris Piwowar with another maximum, Herbie Sage picking up two fine singles wins for the Academy 2 team. Brixham Gulls bounced back from their heavy defeat the previous week with a fine 6-4 victory at  Halwell, thanks to a Mick Mercer maximum.

A Giles Tushingham maximum helped his NA Falcons to a victory at Brixham against the Trawlers, 6-4.  Brixham Seals fared better than their colleagues as they returned from Battlers with a 7-3 win, with Stuart Shipley and Bob Parkins again unbeaten for the Seals.  Marldon, who struggled last year, started their campaign with a fine victory over NA Hawks, despite a maximum from Hawks’ Mike Dummett.

An all-Tykes encounter saw the Denbury boys defeat their colleagues from Marldon 8-2, with Paul Hine & Huw Darch unbeaten for Denbury.  Hasbeens’ new signing Mike Coxhead, helped his new team to a  7-3 victory at Torbay Academy over Academy 5.  NA Kestrels, with a Mike Halse maximum, surprised the fancied Brixham Dolphins 6-4.

NA Owls are early leaders of the Fourth Division following a whitewash over Dawlish Dodgers, as Travis Graham, Rob & Rowan Bayliss didn’t let the newly-formed Dodgers get into the match. The Dodgers’ colleagues from Dawlish, the Drifters, picked up another win with a Tony Bussell maximum helping them beat Brixham Swifts 7-3.  Both the Torbay Academy sides in the Fourth Division are unbeaten following wins over Newton Abbot teams. Another Matt Frettsome maximum helped Academy 6 beat the Vultures 8-2, and a fine all-round performance from the youngsters of Academy 7 saw off the challenge from NA Kites 7-3.
