ALBANY FLORISTS-SPONSORED SOUTH DEVON & TORBAY TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE

Third Division leaders NA Hawks let a 4-0 lead slip to a 6-4 defeat against close rivals Denbury Tykes, but still hang onto the top spot. Ben Hoare and Matt Cooper had maximums  for 2nd placed Torbay Academy 4, as they defeated  Hasbeens 8-2  and now sit just 3 points behind the Hawks, with Denbury Tykes a further 7 points behind in 3rd. Basement side Dawlish Diamonds picked up valuable points as they defeated Brixham Diamonds 7-3.

Torre Tigers’ 9-1 win over Dawlish Drifters keeps them clear at the top of the fourth division; Rob Burridge, Jean Neafcy and Robert Excell won all their singles, but the Drifters scraped a point by winning the final doubles. In 2nd place, and with a game in hand, Torbay Academy 5 whitewashed Brixham Swifts. Luke Robins was in fine form for 3rd place NA Ospreys as they won 6-4 at Torres R Us. Torre Tigers’ Jean Neafcy turned out for clubmates, Torres R Us to dent the Ospreys challenge for the top.  In an all-Newton Abbot clash, the Owls defeated the Kites 6-4. Father and son combinations in both teams kept the honours even, as Rob and Rowan Bayliss with 2 singles wins each, won the match but Kevin and Richard Salt defeated the Bayliss’s in the doubles.

NA Kites, Richard & Kevin Salt, beating the NA Owls’ Rowan & Rob Bayliss.

The top two sides in Division Two are still locked together on the same number of points as both secured 8-2 victories. Torbay Academy 3 beat basement side Marldon Tykes with Dan Webster-Hall and Michael Hernandez unbeaten, while Andy Tyrrell and Jim McIvor had maximums for the NA Eagles as they defeated the Battlers. Brixham Pirates have moved into 3rd place with a whitewash victory over the Taverners. Martin Sharp, Nick Shipley and Ben Deakin had to work hard for their victory and although still 25 points off the pace, with two games in hand could still have a shout at the title.

The First Division’s top match between 1st and 2nd placed Torbay Academy 1 and N A Batmen, was postponed to enable the Academy’s Jo Piwowar to collect her Herald Express Torbay Sports Personality Coach of the Year award, a richly deserved award for the Academy’s Jo, who along with husband Kris, have done so much for the sport in the Torbay area over the last few years. Third-placed Brixham Sharks were too strong for a weakened NA Buzzards side, still without injured star performer Kevin Nicholls; Clive Banham took a maximum for the Sharks in their 8-2 victory. Basement side Halwell with Dave Wadling in fine form, well supported by Rod Sugden and Mick Atkinson, secured a rare victory beating Brixham Gulls 7-3.
