Press Report 10th Apr 2016

SOUTH DEVON & TORBAY TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE.

The first title of the 2015-16 season has been decided. Torbay Academy 6 youngsters’ win over Brixham Swifts, followed by 2nd placed NA Kestrels’ defeat by club mates the Kites, has secured the Fourth Division title for the Academy side. Kestrels still look good for the runners-up spot, no thanks to Richard Salt’s maximum for the Kites as they defeated the Kestrels 6-4.  Torre Tigers came up against an inspired Tom Andrews as they drew with his Brixham Swifts side; the Tigers then went to Newton Abbot and came away with a fine 9-1 victory to move up the table, with Rob Burridge and Jean Neafcy undefeated for the Tigers.

The battle of the chasers at the top of the First Division saw NA Batmen just get the better of Brixham Sharks 6-4, to consolidate their runners-up position. Shaun Gibbs took a maximum for the Batmen who trail leaders Denbury Imports by 8 points with just one match to play.

NA Buzzards have club mates the Eagles to thank for extending their lead at the top of the Second Division to 13 points, with 2 matches to play.  While the Buzzards stuttered to a 7-3 victory over basement side Denbury Tykes, NA Eagles held both the chasing Brixham sides, Pirates and Imports, to draws.  The Buzzards’ Mike Dummett, and Brixham Pirates’ Clive Banham both secured maximums for their teams.  Taverners, eyeing up the 4th spot, came away from Dawlish Aces with a hard fought 6-4 victory.

NA Eagles’ Jim McIvor, Doug Morgan & Andy Tyrrell

Marldon Tykes, the leaders of the Third Division sat out watching their rivals battle it out. Brixham Dolphins and NA Hawks both trail by 16 points. The Dolphins drew 5-5 with Torbay Academy, giving the Hawks the chance to make up ground, which they duly did away at Hasbeens, with a fine 8-2 victory, as Mike Coxhead took another maximum for the Hawks.  Torre Bats climb up the table with two big wins over the luckless Dawlish sides, beating the Diamonds 8-2 and then the Drifters 10-0, with Tony Nguyen unbeaten for the Torre outfit.

The last place in the Cup semi-finals goes to NA Kestrels who defeated clubmates the Eagles in a thrilling quarter-final encounter. The Eagles’ Andy Tyrrell was undefeated, but the all-round team effort from Luke Robins, Harry Usher and Alex Walmsley saw the Kestrels’ youngsters through to a 5-4 victory and a semi- final encounter against Torbay Academy 6 next week.
