Press Report 9th Nov 2014

Robert Excell Photography-Sponsored South Devon & Torbay Table Tennis League

With the top 2 sides not playing, NA Batmen took the opportunity to move into the runner-up spot in the First Division. Their 7-3 victory over Brixham Gulls featured a superb performance from the Gulls youngster, Josh Millman, who, in an outstanding set, beat Nick Halse 20-18 in the 5th game, went on to beat Dennis Gibbs, also in 5, before completing his maximum against Chris Dunn. Halwell shared the points with NA Buzzards, with Kelvin Cheung recording a maximum for the Buzzards. The Tushinghams, Giles & Yannick, saw Dawlish Aces home against Torbay Academy II 7-3

Taverners opened up a lead at the top of the 2nd Division with a whitewash victory over Brixham Swallows. Torbay Academy III climbed up to 2nd place with a 7-3 victory over Marldon Tykes, Paul Hine collecting another maximum for the Academy.  NA Eagles kept in contention with a convincing victory over Brixham Pirates. Holly Johns started the evening off well for the Pirates, defeating Dennis Long, but that was the only Pirates’win all night as they went down 9-1.

Dawlish Diamonds lead the 3rd Division despite going down 6-4 to Brixham Diamonds.  Hasbeens closed the gap at the top by gaining a 7-3 victory over the Brixham Panthers, with Joe Smallshaw and Richard Fitzgerald gaining maximums for the Hasbeens. Brixham Rebels, aided by new signing David Friend’s maximum, defeated Brixham Diamonds 6-4 in a re-arranged match.  The Rebels also had time to share the points with Dawlish Drifters 5-5.

The top two sides in Division 4, Brixham Dolphins and Torbay Academy IV, played out a 5-5 draw.  Third place Torre Nadoes were surprisingly beaten by NA Hawks, with Daniel Webster-Hall’s maximum and then partnership with Joe Strickland in the doubles seeing the Newton Abbot side home 6-4. Two other teams of youngsters from the Newton Abbot club battled against each other, resulting in the Kestrels defeating the Owls 6-4. Andrei Constantin recorded a maximum for the Kestrels, and the match featured first singles wins, in the league, for Sam Hiles, Lewis Short and Rob Bayliss.
