Sadly, points were hard to come by at the St.Neots’ regional table tennis centre for the South Yorkshire senior team at the County championships in Cambridgeshire. The squad, manfully captained by Shaun Bibby (Scorpions) stumbled to back to back defeats. In his post match comments Shaun said, “Division Two of the championships provides strong and determined opposition, yet our players gave their best to achieve a positive result”. However, plaudits were achieved by the “golden girls” of the team who gained the only sets for South Yorkshire over the two matches. Bibby predicted that the opening encounter against Staffordshire would herald the best chance of a result; however the Tykes challenge ended in a narrow 6-4 loss. Pat Thorley (NGH) and Vicky Johnston (Vulcan) both turned in fine unbeaten performances taking both sets against Georgia Harris and Lucie Hancock who are currently ranked 68 and 73 respectively in the England under 21’s women’s list. Chris Cattell (Vulcan), Steve Crosby (Crookes) and Bibby all failed to register despite some gritty performances.
Warwickshire seconds proved to be a step too far for South Yorkshire as they were whitewashed by the powerful Midlanders. Vicky came within a whisker of preventing the clean sweep when, during a nail biting contest against the current England no.67 - Lisa Rinnhofer, she held a match point but unfortunately overcooked a forehand smash.
Next term, captain Bibby hopes that he can call upon the support of some of our higher ranked local players, in order to mount a serious promotion challenge in 2020.
