Last week's South Yorkshire schools under 11’s team event was dominated by Greystones as both the boys and girls teams emerged triumphant at the Institute for Sport. The teams owe much of their success to the coaching skills and enthusiasm of Kieran Alvey of the Albert Premier club based at Darnall. On the tables, the boy’s team of Daniel Longley, Joe Bardell, Henry Mason, Tirso Combley and Jacob Hashingdon overcame Hallam Primary, Totley ‘A’, Bramley Sunnyside and Totley ‘B’ in a round robin format without loss.
Double delight was achieved by the girls as the team comprising Laura Hart, Ella Bowman, Emily Crowley and Layla Mackay overcame Bramley Sunnyside in the final 6-2.
In the Under 13 boy’s event, teams from Silverdale, Wickersley, Tapton, Meadowhead and Westfield competed in a round robin format. The winners were Jack Smith, Charlie Duke, Will Stringer and George Henderson representing Silverdale.
Seven teams entered the Under 16 boy’s competition and following the group matches Wickersley and Silverdale reached the final.
Wickersley proved too strong as their team of Adam Szabo, Lewis Ellams, Connor Halford and Riley Astle overcame James Chenery, Luke Burgess, Ivan Hamshaw-Thomas and Will Gresham by a score of 4-0.
The event was managed by Jim Kenny and Phil Wright of the Sheffield table tennis league.
In the English County Seniors championships the South Yorkshire squad travelled to Bedfordshire to play three matches in Division 2A in one day! Richard Element (Stocksbridge) featured by winning 5/6, a feat replicated by our women's number one Pat Thorley (Northern General). Team captain Shaun Bibby (Scorpions) and Steve Crosby (Crookes) both ended with 3/6. Sarah Thorne’s win against Leicestershire helped give the Tykes their only win on the day by 6-4. South Yorkshire ultimately went down 6-4 against Norfolk and drew with Cambridgeshire, during a hard fought contest. Further county championship matches will take place in the New Year.
