Abbeydale newcomer Jack Cross has teamed up with James Chenery and Luke Burgess (both Vulcan Redtooth), in the topflight of the Sheffield junior league, which provides an incubator for the future of local table tennis youngsters. Once again, Phil Wright and Fay Buchan were on hand at the English Institute of Sport to oversee the opening rounds of competition and it was Jack, James and Luke who caught the eye and put down a clear marker as favourites for the Division One title. Their new team which has adopted the title of “King Pong”, eased through the first round of matches with the whitewashing of “TLT TT” and a 9-1 result over Birkdale ‘A’when Jake Chan prevented the clean sweep with a 3-2 victory over Burgess.

In a match that ended with honours even, Tom Clarke (Abbey Vipers) took a treble against “Albert” with wins over Ross Stewart-Young, Christian Oughton and Noah Van Hoorebeek to finish the day undefeated.
