Silksworth  B v Desperadoes

Desperadoes travelled with regular John Reid and the father and son combo of Nigel and Sam Duffin to Silksworth B who have bolstered their playing squad with the addition of the very competent Sean Cleghorn who joined John  Foster and Mirek Godlewski for the game. Silksworth who are well placed in the table struggled in some of the games with John Reid and Sam Duffin scoring a good victory each in the singles and combining to win the doubles. This gave Desperadoes a much needed point in a 7-3 defeat.

Brandon B V Eagles

The youthful team of Eagles represented by Jack Pugh, Charlie Coates and Oliver King travelled to Brandon B who turned out two talented juniors of their own in Becca Harrison and Troy Madison who teamed up with the experienced John Spencer.

Exciting and competitive games ensued with some ends of note. Jack Pugh managed to beat Troy over three fast paced ends taking the final end after a marathon 20-18 scoreline.

Charlie’s game with Becca was over 4 ends with no more than three points difference in any end but he eventually won 3-1.

The game of the night was the final game between Jack and John which went all the way to 5 ends and Jack pinched the final end in a fine display of controlled thoughtful play 11-8, to give him the player of the match award. However Eagles went down 6-4 but did gain a valuable point in the process.

Chargers v Brandon A

A terrific game between league leaders Brandon who have won all their league games this season and third placed Chargers. Chargers had regulars Max Duffin, Peter Whitfield and Terry Charlton, while Brandon had the reliable Tony Taylor alongside exciting Simone Knopf and in only his third game in the league Alan Perry. The match was about which of the two Juniors performed the best and with Simone and Max both winning two, it was down to the game between them as to who ended up as player of the match. The game went to 1-1 but Max started hitting drives down the backhand and Simone struggled to cope which gave Max the initiative and the game. Tony Taylor showed his reliability winning two of his games but with Peter and Terry chipping in with one, the game stood at 5-4 to Chargers going into the doubles. Peter and Max started well going into a 2 game lead but Simone and Tony played the long game and came back to 3-2 giving Brandon a share of the points at 5-5.

Max Duffin v Jacob Helm Handicap Cup Singles

Max 5th in Division 3 averages was up against Jake Helm 7th in the 1st Division but he had a 9 point start in this game and needed it all in the first game where both players played an attacking game and Max came out 21-17 ahead. Max decided to play more tactical, slowly forcing Jake away from the table before hitting killer smashes past him. This gave him the initiative and he took the next two games without letting Jake back into the game winning 3-0 overall.

Ian McAllister(Aces) v Jamie Dent(St Johns) Handicap Cup Singles

These two exciting attacking players were drawn against each other with Ian having to give Jamie Dent a 4 point start. The game was played as an attacking fest with very little defensive play by either player. At every opportunity each one tried to force the other back and some terrific rallies were played at a phenomenal pace. Jamie used his advantage and took the first game 21-16. However Ian started to hit more consistent drives and pushed Jamie onto his backhand more and more, and came back strongly to take the next two games. The last game was a very even game and from 15-15 it went point for point all the way through but eventually Ian hit a stunning back hand drive to complete a 25-23 win and 3-1 overall score. Look out Mirek in the next round.

Matt Greenwood(Desperadoes) v Ian Wilson(Redby B)

Matt  is proving a real find for the Sacriston club improving his game with every performance. Although he had a 3 point start this was never needed as he closed out the game in 3 ends. Ian tried to keep the ball on the table, but Matt with his consistent driving play drove Ian further and further away from the table and would then switch corners to complete the match. It has to be mentioned that Matt did manage a number of edges and nets to his advantage but even if he hadn’t it would not have affected the result, 3-0 to Matt who is through to Round 3.
