Chargers v Desperadoes, Chargers were certainly hoping for an easier game than it turned out with the youngsters from Desperadoes making them work all the way. John Reid for Chargers looked to be cruising in the first two ends of his game against Oliver King but Oliver took the third end and made John really work hard in the 4th end before John took it 11-9. Peter Whitfield for Chargers had a tough game against Oliver Turnbull who modified his normal aggressive play to play Peter at his own defensive  game and it too Peter 4 ends to wear his opponent down. Paul Henderson(Chargers) won his first end easily but the second end was taken to an epic 17-15 with Robert Atkinson’s attacking forehand s eventually taking him through. However Paul started playing tactically to keep the ball on the table and took the next two ends to win 3-2. The youngsters of the Desperadoes were certainly not being overawed and Oliver King made Peter work his way through 4 ends before Peter won 3-1. The doubles with John and Paul against Oliver Turnbull and Robert Atkinson were again played out over four ends before the experience of the Chargers came through. John beat Robert over three ends but the next game went the way of the Desperadoes as Oliver Turnbull beat Paul over three ends and this was repeated when Oliver King also beat Paul over three ends. It was down to the last game to see if Chargers would gain all four points and it took all of John Reid’s concentration to win a tremendous 5 end battle with Oliver Turnbull to give the Chargers the victory and all four points 8-2.
Comets v Ouston
With NCTT dropping 2 points in their last game, Comets needed to gain all points to keep their championship hopes on track. They were playing Ouston and with the reliable Nikki and Debbie Irwin and Colin Pritchard were looking forward to a routine match but Ouston turned up with two new players who had only recently joined the club. Debbie swept aside J King easily in the first game but Colin’s game against J Nichols was a real nail biter as it took Colin 5 ends to dispose of his opponent. Nikki only took three ends to beat J Milroy but it wasn’t as comfortable as it sounds. J King proved a far more worthy opponent against Colin in the fourth game but Colin came through  3-0. The doubles of Debbie and Colin against J King and J Milroy was taken convincingly 3-0 and the platform was now set to finish the game off which Comets did and with only J King and J Milroy winning and end each Comets completed a 10-0 win with Debbie Irwin being player of the match.

A Star of the future
Max Duffin who qualifies to play in the Under 13 section of the Sunderland Closed Championships gave the very experienced Dave Pringle an absolute shock in his handicap game with him.
Dave struggled and was taken to the final set in a pulsating game. Dave took the first two sets 21-19 and 22-20 but then lost the next two 19-21, 19-21 as Max  Duffin started coping better with Dave’s serve and spin attack. The final end  was equally as tense but Dave did manage to close it out by playing a tactical defensive game making sure he kept getting the ball back on the table 21-17. His comments about Max were as follows:-
“Just to let you know young Max and I had a hell of a ding dong of a match and I was very fortunate to come out a very narrow winner. The scores were:
21-19, 22-20, 19-21, 19-21, 21-17
You should be very proud of him as he played very well and has the most pleasant attitude I have ever come across.  He is definitely one  for the future and one to nurture! Well done to you as his coach because his technique is text book. He's  going to be a cracking player”
Well done Max, here’s looking forward to the Sunderland Closed championship!

Sam slams into the next round
Sam Duffin drawn against John Foster from Durham CA B hadn’t played any handicap cup games so was a little nervous against an opponent who had already beaten Ian McAllister from Sacriston in Round 1. His nerves were soon a thing of the past as he quickly settled into his attacking style and hitting top spin forehands  he had John on the retreat and easily took the first game 21-2. John realised he had to change his style of play and with a more measured approach and trying to keep the ball on the table he proved a little more difficult to break down in the following game but Sam’s determination to maintain his attack proved too much as he ran 21-18. The final game was again quickly over as Sam swept John aside 21-8 to give him 3-0 win and progression into the next round  at home against Joe Muldowney who beat our own Terry Charlton but Sam will have a 14 point start.
