Silksworth b V Chargers(Handicap Cup)

Silksworth were up against it from the start having been beaten twice by Chargers in the league already this season and with Chargers taking usual starters Max Duffin and Peter Whitfield and adding newcomer Dennis Jennings to their line up they were playing John Foster, George Carlyon and Miroslav Godlewski for Silksworth. Chargers got off to the perfect start taking the first two games in 2 ends, but Miroslav hit back to beat Dennis in 2 ends, and with George taking the first end against Peter Whitfield it looked as if the match could go all the way, but Peter wore George down with a number of lucky edges and nets that gave him the next two ends. The next game was the game of the night between John and Dennis with John’s forehand drives giving him the edge in the first game. Dennis under the influence of travelling coach Dan Hutchinson adjusted his game, to keep the ball on the table, so that he could bring his backhand drive into effect and he took the next 2 ends to win 2-1. Max finished the match by beating Miroslav in 2 ends to give Chargers an unbeatable 5-1 score.

Bombers v East Boldon A(handicap Cup)

Lee Maher joined the two Dans Hutchinson and Nicholson to take on the newcomers to Division 2 in the handicap cup. East Boldon played exciting newcomer to the league David Fosberg along with Neil Wilkinson and Jeff Hope. The handicapper got it right with the game going to the final end between the two number ones. Dan Hutchinson won 1, Lee won 2 and Dan Nicholson 1 and with the other games going to East Boldon, the final game was the game of the night between Dan Hutchinson and David Fosberg with players attacking at every opportunity. There was never very many points between the two and fortunately for Bombers, Dan retained his cool to keep playing dynamic table tennis moving David around the board and played out the game in two ends with no more than 4 points in each game .

Bombers will face a club derby against Sacriston Desperadoes in the next round.

Eagles v Redby B

eagles cup team 021214

The youngest team in the league played the most mature team in the league in the handicap cup, with Eagles having 12 year old Luke Dumighan, 14 year old Charlie Coates, and 15 year old Haydn Williamson, against Veterans Howard Brown, Ian Wilson and Ron Douglas. Again the handicapper was in the right ball park with 5 games going to three ends and not a lot of difference between the teams. Nobody won all their games but Luke beat two of his opponents and took Ron to 21-16 before losing out to him in the game of the night. Ron won 2 as did Howard and with Ian beating Haydn, Redby did enough to take the game 5-3. Haydn and Howard played an exhibition game at the end and with nothing at stake, Haydn could relax and won in 2. Redby play either Durham A or St Gabriels B in the next round.

Sacriston are using their grants successfully in their development of Juniors with Charlie Coates from the village being presented with his Young Umpires  Certificate from Local Councillor Heather Liddle just before his game for Sacriston Eagles against Redby B in the handicap cup of the Sunderland league. Charlie went on to umpire three games in the match which unfortunately the Eagles lost 5-4 to a much older and experienced team.
